Black Ops 4 FREE Battle Royale mode: When you can download and play COD for free

Call of Duty Black Ops 4 is getting a free trial on PS4, Xbox One and PC.

The free trial is limited to the game’s Battle Royale mode Blackout, as Activision aims to steal Fortnite’s spotlight.

Competing with Fortnite is difficult for any Battle Royale game, especially when Epic’s shooter is available for free and Call of Duty’s is part of a full-priced release.

“Today, Activision and Treyarch announced that fans will be able to play Call of Duty: Black Ops 4’s popular Battle Royale mode for free in the Blackout Free Trial, which begins Thursday for one week on PS4, Xbox One and PC,” Activision explains.

“The Blackout Free Trial will feature all the intense action from the game mode that brings together characters, locations, weapons and gear from across the series with Black Ops signature gameplay fans know and love.”

The Blackout Battle Royale trial begins on January 17, although exact timings are yet to be announced.

Express Online has contacted Activision for confirmation, although the most likely start time is 6pm GMT.

The news comes as Black Ops 4 gets a big new update on PS4, Xbox One and PC.

This includes the Chaos Control Featured Playlist, which grants teams unlimited lives.

Elsewhere, capture times have been increased to 2 minutes per zone, while the round time limit is up to 3.5 minutes.

Then there’s the 115 Days of Zombies event, which introduces Zombies 2XP, Zombies 2X Weapon XP, and 2X Nebulium Plasma.

Upcoming Zombies content includes Mastery Camos with their own unique Challenges to complete in the Armory.

New weapons include the MP 40, Grav, Daemon 3XB, and SWAT RFT.

Treyarch has also promised more versatility in Zombies, thanks to the ability to equip Mastercrafts, Reactive Camos, and Weapon Camos acquired in the Black Market.
