BBC UK weather forecast: SNOW showers to pummel Britain as nation PLUNGES into Arctic air

With the isobars alining from north to south and following behind a weather front, the UK is being pushed into colder air today.

Most places face ice and frost first thing this morning, as well as wintry showers throughout the day.

At the moment ice is the greatest hazard this Thursday, particularly across the northern half of the UK.

Meanwhile, a weather front to the south is drifting across East Anglia and the south east during the morning rush hour.

In the north, the strong northerly winds will feed showers into northern and eastern Scotland, where snow is predicted.

Carol Kirkwood, who presents the BBC Breakfast weather forecast, warned viewers snow showers would be heading southwards today.

She reported: “We still have snow showers in the forecast, we’ve got them across the North York Moors for example and there’s still some slipping southwards.

“Now there’s three areas which all have the potential to produce some rain, sleet and snow.”

Today, there will be some outbreaks of rain in eastern coastal counties, particularly in the North York Moors and the Pennines.

Whereas, near the capital city there will be snow and sleet, which is going to eventually turn into rain as the day progresses.

The snow showers will continue to affect some eastern counties this afternoon and temperatures throughout the UK will range between four and eight degrees Celsius, even in places where there is sunshine.

Overnight and into Friday the heat value could drop to minus three degrees in places as snow showers persist in the east.

With cold weather sweeping the UK and forecasters predicting brisk conditions, bookmaker Coral has put odds on at 4-5 for snow to fall in London by the end of this weekend.

Snow is set to fall across parts of Scotland and northern England in the next 24 hours and then expected to make its way down the UK.

Coral’s spokesman Harry Aikenhead said: “Scotland and parts of northern England can expect snow in the next day or so and all the signs are pointing to the whole of the UK being affected sooner rather than later.

“We make it odds on that the capital gets snow by the end of the weekend, which could well bring with it its fair share of chaos.”

The firm make it a 5-4 chance this month is the coldest January on record, as the icy blast arrives.

“There’s every chance we could be on for a record breaking cold month if the forecasts do ring true,” Harry added.

“We’re certainly set for more than one or two freezing mornings before January is out.”

BBC Breakfast airs weekdays on BBC One at 6am.
