Alexander Zverev marathon tie makes Britain’s Johanna Konta Australian Open record breaker

Konta was made to wait all day to get her second-round match with Garbine Muguruza underway on Margaret Court Arena.

The pair we due on court following the conclusion of Zverev vs Jeremy Chardy, where the German almost squandered a two-set lead, but rallied to save his blushes in the decider.

The men’s tie drew to a close shortly after midnight on the southern coast of Australia.

It means Konta and Muguruza were waiting in the wings for the show court to become available.

The latest time a match has ever started at the Australian Open was at 11.59pm when Elise Mertens defeated Daria Gavriovla in the second round last year.

But now Konta has the unwanted record of being the latest ever starter of match Down Under.

Konta is the last remaining Briton in the season-opening Grand Slam.

But she knows how difficult a tie with the No 18 seed will be.

“If I have learned anything in the years I have been on tour, it is anybody can play at the very highest level on any given day,” Konta said.

“And for someone to win two Grand Slam titles, still ranked in the top 20, she is a heck of a player.

“Going on court against anyone, you don’t underestimate them, especially not someone like her.

“No I don’t think she is vulnerable – I think she is doing very well and I am looking forward to playing her again.”
