Steph Curry insists Warriors have moved beyond ‘making statements’ ahead of Pelicans game

The 30-year-old guard made the comments after the Warriors put on a spectacular display against their Western Conference rivals, the Denver Nuggets, on Tuesday night.

Curry helped inflict a 142-111 defeat on the Nuggets in a game which saw the Warriors set a new NBA record for points scored in one quarter.

During the first quarter of the game the Warriors scored 51 points, beating the previous record of 50 set by five teams – of which the Phoenix Suns were the last franchise to accomplish the feat in 1990.

“I think we’re way past making statements,” Curry said, according to Warriors Outsiders podcast co-host Drew Shiller.

“We understand what type of team we are and what we’re capable of.

“When we play like we played tonight, we’re the best team in the league.”

The Warriors ‘big three’ of Curry, Kevin Durant and Klay Thompson notched up 89 points between them – Curry and Thompson both scored 31 points and Durant had 27.

At the final buzzer Golden State had shot 60 per-cent from the floor and 53.8 per-cent from three-point range.

Coming into the game the Nuggets were ranked second in three-point defence, but Golden State obliterated them after making 21-of-39 shots from behind the arc.

Nuggets head coach Michael Malone believes the Warriors had ‘sent a message’ to their rivals, after the manner of their victory.

“Take nothing away from them, they came in and did exactly what they are suppose to do,” Malone said.

“They came in here and showed why they are one of the best team’s in the world and they have won multiple world championships for a reason.

“They sent a message, they came in and kicked our ass.

“We will learn from it, we will get better from it and hopefully this can be a motivating factor moving forward.”

The Warriors have regained top spot in the Western Conference as they head into their game against the Pelicans at the Oracle Arena.

Golden State have won four of the last five regular season games against the Pelicans, with those match-ups averaging 238 points per game.

Fans will be hoping history repeats itself and the encounter will be another fast paced, high-scoring game.
