Nick Foles: Brett Favre weighs in on future of Eagles quarterback and Carson Wentz

The Eagles quarterback saga has continued on for a second season in Philadelphia and Favre believes they should choose Foles over Wentz.

Favre has close links with Philadelphia, after he and Eagles head coach Doug Pederson were team-mates for four years, when Favre was quarterback for the Green Bay Packers.

“No disrespect at all to Carson Wentz, I think he’s already proven that he’s a great quarterback. Totally different than Nick Foles,” Favre said.

“Nick Foles to me is more of a Brady-esque-type quarterback – very limited in what he can do, but very, very good in what he does. Pure pocket passer.

“He’s great at dishing it out, and he’s proven that he’s clutch. And he did it this past week, he did it last year, he’s done it time and time again.

Foles replaced Wentz after he suffered a season-ending back injury towards the end of the regular season.

Last season the 29-year-old led the Eagles to Super Bowl victory and picked up the MVP award in the process.

And after stepping up to replace Wentz again this season, he led the Eagles into the playoffs, before being knocked out in the divisional round against the New Orleans Saints 20-14.

Favre thinks Foles and the Eagles are a good fit.

“He’s proven that he can win the big games,” Favre said no the radio show SiriusXM.

“So, that, I think, is what we have to look at for the Eagles or anyone in a similar situation — it’s about winning.

“It’s about being clutch, doing, really, what you expect your players to do. And he does it as well as anyone.

“Now, can he run the read-option? Absolutely not. So I wouldn’t say that you go with Carson just yet, no disrespect, again, to him.

“But I think the old saying, dance with the one who brung ya — they’re both young, and can you keep going with both of them? I don’t think so, so you have to make a decision, but I think it’s a difficult decision.”

There is no doubt the Eagles have a big choice ahead of them regarding Foles.

They have three options available this offseason for the quarterback whose stock has risen considerably.

They can decline Foles contract option for 2019, thus allowing him to become a free agent, or pick up his option with the desire to keep him, or pick up his option with the desire to trade him on

If the Eagles do pick up his option it will cost them $20million, so they are only expected to do so if they then want to move him on.

As for Foles’ take on what will happen next, he said:“Everything is open. We’ll see.”
