Arsenal transfer news: Unai Emery identifies January target with Sven Mislintat to leave

Arsenal boss Emery is looking to strengthen his squad this winter, with Mislintat charged with the task of identifying targets.

There is talk, however, that the Gunners’ head of recruitment could be on his way out of the club.

Mislintat has reportedly been lined up for a job at Bundesliga giants Bayern Munich and, with Arsenal looking to hire a director of football, a parting of the ways looks on the cards.

And The Sun have claimed Emery has identified one target himself this month – Sevilla’s Banega.

Arsenal started the season with a 22-game unbeaten run, suggesting a campaign of success lies in wait.

But their form has recently tailed off.

As a result, the Gunners are sweating on their chances of finishing in the top four – something many supporters feel in the minimum requirement.

Arsenal have not played a Champions League match since their 5-1 defeat to Bayern Munich on March 7 2017.

And fans are eager for them to secure a return to Europe’s top-tier club competition.

As a result, Emery feels his side needs strengthening.

Barcelona’s Denis Suarez is one player who has been heavily linked with a move to the Emirates.

But The Sun say Banega is Emery’s own specific target.

The Arsenal boss managed the Argentina international at Sevilla, where they won three Europa League titles together.

Banega could arrive as a replacement for Aaron Ramsey.

But Arsenal are only able to sign players on loan – something Emery confirmed in a sensational press conference last week.

“We cannot sign anyone permanently,” Emery said prior to Arsenal’s 1-0 Premier League defeat to West Ham on Saturday.

“Only loan players this January.

“I know the club is working for the possibility of players who can help us with this condition (on loan).”
