Ivanka Trump: White House responds to claims Donald’s daughter to be World Bank chief

Current World Bank President Jim Yong Kim announced last week that he would step down from the post in February – sparking rumours about his replacement. The Financial Times reported that Mr Trump’s wife Ivanka was being “floated around Washington” as a possible candidate for the job. Mr Trump has faced continued criticism for appointing daughter Ivanka as a senior White House advisor and her husband, Jared Kushner, to a similar role.

Under the US constitution, the President is forbidden from installing a leader, as a preferred candidate is approved by the bank’s board.

But the president’s nominee is usually voted into the board.

However, if Mr Trump nominated Ivanka as World Bank President, he would likely face a backlash.

President Trump has come under heavy criticism for allowing family members to have high ranking positions in his Government.

During Mr Trump’s 2016 presidential campaign, Mr Kushner helped run his father-in-law’s digital media strategy.

The financial institution provides loans to countries as well as assisting with development and tackling poverty.

On Monday, the White House’s Deputy Director of Communications Jessica Ditto confirmed that the “reports that she is under consideration are false”.

But the White House employee did confirm that Treasury Secretary Steve Mnuchin and acting chief of staff Mick Mulvaney together approached the president’s daughter, who also works as his personal adviser.

Mrs Ditto said Mrs Trump was asked to “help manage the U.S. nomination process as she’s worked closely with the World Bank’s leadership for the past two years”.
