Huawei P20 Pro could soon face fierce camera competition from a new rival

Huawei P20 Pro has long established itself as one of the best mobile camera offerings around.

That hardware comes with a 40-megapixel main sensor that is accompanied by a 20-megapixel monochrome sensor and an 8-megapixel telephoto lens.

The trio of sensors combine to deliver one of the best photography experiences on a smartphone.

Although the P20 Pro has some of the best camera hardware on a handset, it also has some of the best software, too.

The Chinese device was the first to tout a night mode that made shots taken in low-light conditions brighter with laudable details retained.

Huawei’s tool worked by asking users to hold their phone steady for a few seconds while multiple photos at different exposures were taken and then stitched together.

Additionally, the Huawei P20 Pro also offered a 3-times optical zoom, meaning owners could get closer to their subjects without losing details.

Optical zoom is preferred to digital methods because it offers a true zoom and does not rely on in-camera processing to produce a shot.

Such a feature was introduced at a time many other smartphones were only offering fans a 2-times optical zoom.

However, it appears the Huawei P20 Pro’s optical zoom is about to be radically challenged by Chinese OEM OPPO.

The tech behemoth has teased an event taking place in Beijing on Wednesday, January 16, that suggests it could be about to debut technology that allows for a 10-times optical zoom, as noted by MyDrivers.

A poster was shown off by the Chinese firm that featured the letters “十所为见” which translates to roughly “ten times the view, see you soon”.

Last month renowned tipster Ice Universe tweeted, citing an “OPPO official”, and stated the firm had plans to debut “10-times hybrid optical zoom technology”.

At the time the leaker said such a function could be shown off at CES or Mobile World Congress (MWC).

MWC last year saw OPPO show off a technology dubbed “5x Dual Camera Zoom” that attempted to offer greater levels of zoom in a slim form factor, removing the need for a camera bump on smartphones.

This was made possible by having a normal camera module accompanied by one that was turned 90-degrees.

A number of lenses were used to ensure light was focuses on the main sensor, meaning it worked similar to a periscope.

Although the tease from OPPO appears incredibly tantalising, it is currently unknown if the firm will display the technology in a smartphone it plans to launch.

At MWC last year the firm showed off its 5x zoom tool in a demo smartphone that has not since been released.
