Barcelona transfer news: Chelsea ace Alvaro Morata made target because of Real Madrid past

Barcelona have been linked with a move for Chelsea hitman Morata amid their hunt for a new forward this winter.

The Catalan giants are currently on the lookout for a new No 9 after deciding to offload Munir to fellow La Liga giants Sevilla.

Barcelona saw Paco Alcacer jump ship to Bundesliga giants Borussia Dortmund in the summer and, despite having Lionel Messi, Luis Suarez and Co on the books, feel another forward is needed.

That has seen them tipped to lure Morata away from Chelsea, with the Spaniard struggling over in the Premier League.

And Catalan newspaper Mundo Deportivo claim his Real Madrid past has endeared him to the Barcelona board.

The 26-year-old spent two stints over in the capital.

He, despite often being stuck behind Karim Benzema in the pecking order, it was his second spell that was most-successful.

Morata scored 20 goals in his final season at the Bernabeu, seeing Chelsea pay Real Madrid a huge £58million to secure his signature.

Prior to that, he had also flourished at Juventus in Serie A.

And Mundo Deportivo say it is his goalscoring record at both Real and Juventus that has lead Barcelona to ponder a transfer.

Signing Morata, however, could be difficult.

Atletico Madrid would also love to sign the Chelsea star, particularly with Diego Costa’s future shrouded in uncertainty.

Serie A giants AC Milan, meanwhile, are another interested party.

Meanwhile, Barcelona boss Ernesto Valverde has already praised Morata amid the ongoing speculation.

He said of the Chelsea star: “I can only say the same thing.

“That he’s a great player, that he’s at another team and that we respect that a lot.

“We have to look at it, it’s clear that after Munir’s departure we have a space.

“We’ll see if we can sign a player, although we have to take into account the club’s economic conditions.

“We will see if we can, if someone comes.”
