How to live longer – 80p ‘wonderfood’ you should eat every day to prevent high cholesterol

Eating a healthy balanced diet – including at least five portions of fruit and vegetables a day – could lower the risk of an early death, according to the NHS.

You could also boost your lifespan by doing regular exercise – the “miracle cure” we’ve all been waiting for, it said.

Making some small diet or lifestyle changes could help to increase your life expectancy and avoid an early death.

One of the best fruits to add to your diet are avocados, as they could reduce cholesterol, it’s been claimed.

Avocados are a “wonderfood” that could lower your heart disease risk, according to dietitian Juliette Kellow and nutritionist Dr Sarah Brewer.

It reduces the amount of ‘bad’ LDL cholesterol in the body, while boosting the ‘good’ HDL cholesterol.

Everyone should aim to eat a couple of avocados every week to boost their overall health, they said.

“Creamy and delicious, avocados are loaded with good fats that lower cholesterol and protect against wrinkles,” said the nutritionists.

“They are also packed with a variety of vitamins and minerals that help with everything from keeping eyes healthy to regulating blood pressure.

“Adding avocados to diets has been shown to reduce total cholesterol, LDL [bad] cholesterol, and triglycerides.

“These heart-healthy benefits are most likely thanks to avocados being high in monounsaturated fat.

“Avocados also contain heart-friendly phytosterols such as beta-sitosterol, which help to lower blood cholesterol levels.”

Eating avocado could also help to protect the prostate, and may even reduce prostate cancer cell growth, they added.

When choosing an avocado to buy, look out for those with an unblemished skin.

They’re best eaten raw, and should be left at room temperature to ripen.

The best way to live a healthy life is to eat at least five portions of fruit and vegetables every day, and to do plenty of exercise.

Regular exercise is a crucial aspect to improving overall health, and helping you to live longer.

People that do regular exercise are up to 50 per cent less likely to develop type 2 diabetes and some cancers, said the NHS.

It may even slash the chances of coronary heart disease and stroke by up to 35 per cent.

All UK adults should aim for at least 150 minutes of moderate-intensity activity every week.
