True Detective season three will premiere on HBO in the USA on Sunday, January 13. Led by Oscar-winner Mahershala Ali, the new crime series will be a must-see for thriller fans. With the first two seasons of True Detective consisting of eight episodes apiece, many have been wondering if season three will follow the same format. True Detective season three will consist of eight hour-long episodes.

Creator Nic Pizzolatto has scripted each episode along with screenwriter David Milch who worked on the fourth instalment.

Pizzolatto makes his directorial debut with one of the episodes on this run also.

Episodes will air weekly on HBO in the US and on Sky Atlantic in the UK.

True Detective season three will be available to watch online in the UK via the Sky Go desktop and mobile app.

What is the plot of True Detective season 3?

Season three follows two partner detectives investigating a disturbing crime involving two missing children in the heart of the Ozarks, Arkansas.

The story spans three decades, with a short description from HBO reading: “The next instalment of True Detective tells the story of a macabre crime in the heart of the Ozarks, and a mystery that deepens over decades and plays out in three separate time periods.”

Stars of season one Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson serve as executive producers.

Who is in the cast of True Detective season 3?

Oscar-winner Mahershala Ali leads the cast as Detective Wayne Hays, a state police detective from Northwest Arkansas.

Stephen Dorff from Immortals is set to play Arkansas State Investigator Roland West.

Carmen Ejogo of Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them fame will play school teacher Amelia Reardon, who is connected to two missing children.

Josh Hopkins will star as Jim Dobkins, a private attorney in Fayetteville, Arkansas involved in deposing state police detectives in an ongoing investigation.

Scoot McNairy is Tom, a father who suffers a terrible loss which ties his fate to that of two state police detectives over 10 years.

Mamie Gummer from Mr Robot stars as Lucy Purcell, a young mother of two at the centre of a tragic crime.

Is there a trailer for True Detective season 3?

Yes – HBO has finally released a trailer for season three.

The clip is highly reminiscent of season one’s Southern gothic aesthetic, and the time jumps reflect the narrative of the first run also.

The promo focuses on Ali’s character Detective Wayne Hays as he attempts to solve the mystery surrounding the missing children.

He is shown at different ages throughout and it looks like his older self is forced to revisit painful events from his past.

“My whole brain’s a bunch of missing pieces,” he says as tense shots of investigations are shown alongside eerie shots of children cycling bikes and random notes are shown on screen.

Expect plenty of shocks, jumps and unexpected twists and turns when the series returns.
