Blood Moon conspiracy theories: Why do people think lunar eclipse is the END of the world?

A total lunar eclipse will take place in the early hours of January 21, and a combination of factors have led to the Moon being known as a Super Blood Wolf Moon. Blood Moon’s historically were feared for their eerie red colouring, and a super Moon can cause the celestial object to appear larger than usual. Many believe the eerie Blood Moon is a harbinger of doom and misfortune.

The Blood Moon is a reddish orange hue due to light refraction whilst the Moon is in the Earth’s Umbra.

The refraction blocks light in the blue hue, only allowing reds and oranges to reach the Moon’s surface.

However, the eerie red colour of the Moon has long since evoked suspicion and fear before science could explain the colour change.

Here are a few theories behind the Super Blood Wolf Moon.

Biblical Prophecy

Christian conspiracy theorists believe the upcoming Blood Moon is the indication that a biblical prophecy is ringing true.

One main supporter of the Blood Moon prophecy is Evangelical preacher Paul Begley who lives in West Lafayette in Indiana, United States.

Pastor Begley believes the impending Blood Moon was predicted by holy scripture.

He said in a “prophecy alert”: “The anticipation of this absolute event of a biblical nature is about to happen.

“Yes. To answer your question, ‘is the Super Blood Moon an apocalyptic sign of the doomsday for mankind?’ Is it coming? Yes, but it doesn’t have to be you.

This is a sign in the heavens right over America and America plays a major role with Israel, and here we are about to bring the Middle East a peace agreement.”

A passage in the Book of Revelations reads: “And I beheld when he had opened the sixth seal, and, lo, there was a great earthquake; and the sun became black as sackcloth of hair, and the moon became as blood.”

Native American Legend

A Native American tribe from Northern California known as the Hupa, believe that the Moon has many pets and 20 wives.

According to their myth, most of the Moon’s pets were mountain lions and snakes – and when it didn’t provide them with enough food they attacked.

This made the Moon bleed, turning it the eerie red colour that can be seen during a total lunar eclipse.

Horoscopes

According to AstrologyKing January’s lunar eclipse could mean that “unexpected events and news are likely to cause anxiety and uncertainty about the future.

“Life may seem more hectic and fast-paced than before.”

They add that with a total lunar eclipse, your private life is strongly influenced.

Emotions and instincts may grow stronger during a lunar eclipse, meaning it’s a good time to examine your close relationships.

Wicca

In Wicca culture, a full Moon heightens the spiritual power and magic the Moon permeates.

According to WitchesLore.com, many people will experience a greater sense of inner peace during a lunar eclipse.

The website explains: “The attitude these days towards an eclipse is that of a spiritual event, opening people to a higher level of understanding, and recognised as a time of spiritual evolution.

“Many feel a sense of peace during an eclipse, this is because the Sun’s force is calmed and we are able to go inwards giving us a greater understanding of our inner being, it is a time when the god and goddess are as one.”
