Destiny 3 release date SHOCK news after Bungie/Activision part ways

Destiny 3 could come out sooner rather than later, following the split between Activision and Bungie.

Indeed, according to research firm Cowen and Company, Destiny 3 will have a 2020 release date.

In a new report on GameSpot, the analyst firm said that the Bungie/Activision split was partly due to Destiny 2 not providing the “recurring revenue stream” Activision was looking for.

Bungie is believed to have paid a fee to Activision to obtain the publishing rights to the Destiny franchise.

Cowen and Company also think the decision is best for the future of Destiny as a franchise.

“Ultimately, we think this decision is probably for the best for Destiny as a franchise, as we think having two head cooks in the kitchen with somewhat divergent views created some issues with the development process and led the game down some blind alleys,” Cowen said.

“Destiny was a worthwhile attempt by Activision to build another cornerstone franchise, one that just didn’t quite pan out as they had hoped (underlining once again the high difficulty of creating and managing a successful live service game business), in our view.”

In an open letter to fans, Bungie thanked Activision and said that the split wouldn’t affect Destiny 2’s content roadmap.

“The planned transition process is already underway in its early stages, with Bungie and Activision both committed to making sure the handoff is as seamless as possible,” the letter reads.

“With Forsaken, we’ve learned, and listened, and leaned in to what we believe our players want from a great Destiny experience.

“Rest assured there is more of that on the way. We’ll continue to deliver on the existing Destiny roadmap, and we’re looking forward to releasing more seasonal experiences in the coming months, as well as surprising our community with some exciting announcements about what lies beyond.”

Upcoming Destiny 2 updates will introduce the Crimson Days event, as well as new Gambit maps and rewards.

There’s also a mysterious spring event launching between March and May, and the Solstice of Heroes event coming later in the summer.

In terms of paid content launching as part of the Annual Pass, Bungie is working on another Raid.

That’s on top of Joker’s Wild content, a new Gambit experience and Xur Bounties.
