The result put Liverpool on 57 points from 22 games, seven ahead of closest rivals Manchester City who are at home to Wolves on Monday. Third-placed Tottenham, who have 48 points, host Manchester United on Sunday.

Liverpool produced a clinical if unimpressive performance on the south coast, having lost 2-1 at City in their previous league outing before being beaten by Wolves in the FA Cup third round by the same scoreline.

After a dour first half, Salah produced a moment of trademark individual skill to win the spot kick he converted five minutes into the second half after Pascal Gross fouled him following the Egyptian’s neat footwork in the penalty area.

Xherdan Shaqiri, who got a rare start on the right flank in a reshuffled 4-2-3-1 formation, missed Liverpool’s best chance in the opening half when he headed inches wide after Trent Alexander-Arnold’s cross.

As Brighton threw men forward in the closing stages, Liverpool twice came close to scoring again late on with the home team’s goalkeeper David Button parrying Roberto Firmino’s effort before Salah misfired wide from five metres.

BRIGHTON 0-1 LIVERPOOL

FT: It’s all over folks! Brighton have given Liverpool a real test today but Mohamed Salah’s penalty secures all three points for Jurgen Klopp’s side. That leaves Liverpool seven points clear at the summit of the Premier League with Manchester City and Tottenham still to play.

93: Shane Duffy now a permanent striker. Jurgen Klopp makes his final change as Divock Origi replaces Mohamed Salah.

91: Brighton are appealing for handball inside the penalty area but Van Dijk doesn’t touch it. Brighton recycle it and continue to press.

90: Four minutes of added time.

89: Another defensive change from Jurgen Klopp, who introduces Naby Keita for Sadio Mane.

88: What?! Oh Mohamed Salah! It should be 2-0 but the Egyptian icon has missed a sitter. James Milner gets to the byline and cuts the ball back for Salah, who inexplicably fires wide.

86: Liverpool doing a professional job here. Jordan Henderson is keeping control of the midfield and Mohamed Salah is holding the ball up nicely in attack. Four minutes of normal time remaining.

83: Still no shots on target from Brighton, who haven’t exactly looked like penetrating his stubborn Liverpool defence. As things stand Liverpool will go seven points clear at the top of the Premier League table.

81: Liverpool should be out of sight here after some lovely interplay from Firmino and Salah tees up Wijnaldum, who fires wide of the target. Brighton hopes still alive… just.

78: Gross makes way for Kayal as Chris Hughton makes his third and final change. Brighton look set to throw the kitchen sink at Liverpool in these closing stages.

75: Roberto Firmino gallops through the middle untouched and he unleashes a fizzing shot which David Button has to parry away.

72: Jurgen Klopp looks to sure things up with reliable old James Milner replacing Xherdan Shaqiri.

69: Alisson is a little too cautious and tips Locadia’s already wayward effort wide for a corner. The Brazilian flaps at the first delivery and Liverpool clear the second.

66: Chris Hughton makes a double change with Knockaert and Andone replacing March and Murray.

65: Brighton have released the handbrake now. They are committing numbers forward in search of an equaliser. Van Dijk senses the visitors are short at the back but his arrowed pass is cleared by Lewis Dunk.

63: Remember, Liverpool can go seven points clear if they hold on…

Of the last 10 Premier League penalties taken by left-footed players, six have failed to score – the other four have all been scored by Mohamed Salah.

60: Big chance! Brighton see a golden opportunity pass them by at the Amex Stadium. Martín Montoya twists Robertson in and out before teeing up Pascal Gross, whose strike is blocked by Fabinho. Could easily have been 1-1 without the makeshift centre-back.

58: Liverpool nerves have been settled by Mohamed Salah’s opener. Andrew Robertson darts into the penalty area but a good covering challenge from Solly March stops him in his tracks.

55: So… what’s Plan B for Brighton? The Seagulls were great defensively in the first half but now they have to go and chase the game. Could the floodgates open?

52: That’s Mohamed Salah’s 50th goal for Liverpool and 17th goal of the season. One-season wonder, right?

BRIGHTON 0-1 LIVERPOOL | SALAH

49: Mohamed Salah converts the penalty to break the deadlock. Button got a hand to it but the power did the job.

PENALTY TO LIVERPOOL

48: Stonewall penalty as Mohamed Salah is chopped down inside the penalty area by Pascal Gross. No idea what he was thinking – but it’s a gift for Liverpool.

48: Jurgen Klopp looks to have pushed Mohamed Salah into a centre-forward position having spent most of the first half on the right flank. The move nearly yields an instant result as the Egyptian charges into the penalty area and forces a smart save from Button.

BRIGHTON 0-0 LIVERPOOL

45: And we’re back underway here at the Amex Stadium. Liverpool are still hopeful of extending their lead at the top of the table and would put the pressure firmly on Tottenham and Manchester City, who have tricky games against Manchester United and Wolves respectively.

No changes for either side.

BRIGHTON 0-0 LIVERPOOL

HT: This won’t be threatening top billing on Match of the Day unless something dramatic happens in the second half. Brighton have been good value for a goalless draw – excellent defensive organisation.

43: 77 percent possession but not a shot on target from Liverpool as we approach the break.

40: Liverpool have made 359 passes compared to 111 from Brighton. Not sure if that kind of thing interests you. Something that might interest you is Locadia sprinting through on goal only for the offside flag to be raised.

Just watching the replay of that again… oh that is tight! Correct decision though.

37: Terrific run from Mane, who travels from his own box deep into Brighton territory. His neat one-two with Mohamed Salah results in a low cross for Firmino, whose stooping header is blocked by Lewis Dunk.

36: Bong sends a long throw-in into the box but Fabinho rises above Murray and nods it clear. Quite a tasty battle developing between those two.

35: Liverpool are totally dominant but are not asking questions.

33: Credit to Brighton, Lewis Dunk and Shane Duffy have that defence terrifically well organised. We’ve barely seen Mohamed Salah or Sadio Mane involved at all.

30: Liverpool are close to breaking the deadlock on the half-hour mark with Shaqiri heading Trent’s pin-point cross wide of the target. Should really have tested Button with that.

28: Now what’s happened here?! Glenn Murray goes down clutching his face after a flailing Fabinho arms connects with the strikers face. No malice.

Down the other end of the field, Liverpool are denied a clear penalty with Lewis Dunk clinging onto Virgil van Dijk’s arm. Referee Kevin Friend has a good look but waves play on.

26: And just as I write that… Mohamed Salah has a decent chance. Roberto Firmino somehow flicks a cross/shot into the path of the Egyptian, who has the ball swiped off his toes by Bong.

25: Goodness me… Fulham have scored two own goals in three minutes to turn a one-goal leading into a one-goal deficit. Quite outstanding really.

I’m afraid to report that nothing much is happening on the south coast. Liverpool continue to dominate the ball but Brighton are defending resolutely.

23: Trent is soldiering on and his full-back partner Robertson draws a free-kick on the opposite flank. Shaqiri floats it in but Brighton clear easily.

20: Worrying sight for Liverpool as Trent Alexander-Arnold goes down again. He hurt himself during the warm up but was deemed okay to play… not so sure he’ll continue this time.

17: Chris Hughton said that beating Liverpool today would be Brighton’s greatest ever Premier League result. Strange thing to say but Glenn Murray almost helps that happen with a header from 11 yards that sails over the crossbar.

14: Liverpool are shifting through the gears now as Brighton start to buckle. Sadio Mane has acres of space to slip in Xherdan Shaqiri but over hits the pass and Bong intercepts.

11: Southampton have the lead against Leicester thanks to a converted penally from James Ward-Prowse. That won’t do Claude Puel’s chances of staying in a job much good.

8: Close! Roberto Firmino should add another to his ever-growing tally. Andrew Robertson sends a delightful cross across the penalty area but the Brazilian pokes it wide.

5: Brighton working their way back onto things with the whole side pressing as a unit the second Liverpool enter their territory. Glenn Murray pressures Alisson and forces the Brazilian stopper to punt it into touch.

3: The first goal of the afternoon goes to Fulham. Andre Schurrle with an absolute wonder goal.

Back to events here at the Amex Stadium, Liverpool are dominating possession but haven’t done much with the ball. Steady start would be the best way of describing things.

BRIGHTON 0-0 LIVERPOOL

1: OK, Liverpool aren’t on the telly box but I’ll bring you everything that you need to know. We’re underway.

I’ll also be keeping an eye on the rest of the 3pm action and inform you of all the news. Like a one-stop-shop sort of thing, eh?

Injury scare

14:55: Quite a worrying sight for Liverpool supporters as Trent Alexander-Arnold rolls his ankle during the warm up. Liverpool player liaison officer was sent in to see officials about making a late change but quickly called back by Liverpool medical staff. He starts.

‘Greatest ever’

14:50: Blimey, Chris Houghton is just showering Liverpool with praise this week.

Fresh from hailing the outstanding Jurgen Klopp, he’s now labelled Virgil van Dijk as being on par with the finest centre-backs in Premier League history.

Asked if Van Dijk deserves to be talked about in the same breath as the likes of John Terry, Sol Campbell and Rio Ferdinand, Hughton replied: “Is he that level of player? Yes of course, I’ve no doubt he is when you look at the qualities he’s got.

“The other players we’ve mentioned have done it over a long period. If you’re asking me if he’s at their level as a player, then the answer is yes.

“But if you’re talking about an influence on our game and the history they have, then of course they’ve done it for a longer time and he hasn’t.”

Elsewhere…

14:45: Four other fixtures in the Premier League this afternoon – slim but promising though with some tasty clashes at the bottom of the table.

Burnley vs Fulham is 16th vs 19th and Cardiff vs Huddersfield is 17th vs 20th.

If I was a betting man I would say they are both nailed-on draws… Nobody will risk losing that, surely?

‘Great team to watch’

14:40: Jurgen Klopp has made an “outstanding” contribution to the Premier League and made Liverpool “a great team to watch”, according to Brighton boss Chris Hughton.

Klopp’s table-topping Reds are threatening to end the club’s 19-year wait for the English title.

Klopp replaced Brendan Rodgers at Anfield in October 2015, and Hughton has been hugely impressed with his work.

“I think he’s been outstanding for the game here,” said Hughton. “When you see how their team work without the ball to get it back and the quality they show, it’s orchestrated by the manager and the demands of the manager.

“This season shows what a great job that he has done. They are better prepared than any other team with the quality they have got. It is all led by Jurgen Klopp and they are a great team to watch.”

Team news

14:35: Midfielder Fabinho was pressed into service as an emergency centre-half to plug Liverpool’s defensive injury gap for their game at Brighton.

Joel Matip was only fit enough for a seat on the bench as he steps up his recovery from a broken collarbone, while Dejan Lovren has a hamstring injury.

Jordan Henderson returned to the starting XI after calf trouble, while Gaetan Bong started for Brighton with Bernardo injured.

The starting XI…

14:30: Hello everyone, sorry I’m late but I’ve been covering West Ham’s 1-0 victory over Arsenal at the London Stadium. Good and deserved win for Manuel Pellegrini’s side. Anyway, here are the line-ups.

Brighton XI: Button, Montoya, Dunk, Duffy, Bong, Stephens, Propper, March, Gross, Locadia, Murray.

Subs: Steele, Bruno, Kayal, Andone, Knockaert, Balogun, Sanders.

Liverpool XI: Alisson, Robertson, Van Dijk, Fabinho, Alexander-Arnold, Henderson, Wijnaldum, Shaqiri, Mane, Salah, Firmino.

Subs: Mignolet, Milner, Keita, Moreno, Origi, Matip, Camacho.

BRIGHTON vs LIVERPOOL

Brighton left-back Bernardo has been ruled out with a hamstring injury suffered in the top-flight clash with West Ham on January 2, with Gaetan Bong set to deputise. Goalkeeper Mat Ryan and winger Alireza Jahanbakhsh are both on Asian Cup duty with their countries, while Jose Izquierdo continues to recover from a knee injury.

Liverpool centre-back Joel Matip has a chance of being fit for the trip to the south coast.

The German has missed the last six matches with a broken collarbone but his comeback is timely with Dejan Lovren ruled out for at least a fortnight with a hamstring problem. Adam Lallana (muscle) and Joe Gomez (foot) are both still sidelined but Jordan Henderson is back in training after a calf problem kept him out of the FA Cup defeat at Wolves.
