Authorities say at the time of the collapse 87 people were working in the mine, 66 of whom were lifted to safety.

The incident happened in Shenmu, situated in China’s north-west Shaanxi province.

Rescue workers are searching for the two missing miners.

The tragedy took place at the Lijiagou Mine, owned by Baiji Mining Company Ltd. 

It is situated above seven hours from Xian, the provincial capital of Shannxi. 

Authorities are investigating the cause of the collapse. 

Pictures from the scene show a large number of vehicles, many of which appear to belong to emergency responders, on the scene. 

The cause of the tragedy is under investigation.
