McDonald’s UK may be well-known for its Big Macs and Chicken Nuggets, but that’s not to say vegetarians need to miss out. The fast-food giant has had a number of vegetarian options on its menu in the UK for some time. But, until today, the child-sized Happy Meal menu was not suitable for those who didn’t eat meat or fish. However, vegetarians can now rejoice, as McDonald’s have now unveiled its new veggie wrap – which is available as a Happy Meal.

The main meal features a red pesto goujon tortilla wrap, which has been garnished with tomato ketchup and shredded lettuce.

The meat-free option is made from yellow split peas, tomato, arborio rice, and sundried tomato pesto – all covered in breadcrumbs.

At 209-calories per serving, the Happy Meal wrap will also come with a side option, a drink, and a toy.

Costing the same as the other meals in the range, this kids meal range comes in at £2.49 per box.

And, while you’re free to buy a Happy Meal whatever your age, a larger portion is also available.

The adult-sized tortilla wrap comprises of two of the goujons, as well as salad with red onion and a dressing of Spicy Relish.

The new recipe has been accredited by the Vegetarian Society, with the goujons and relish being dairy free and vegan.

However, McDonald’s have warned that it’s not totally vegan, as the tortilla wraps pass through the same toaster as the menu’s buns – which do contain milk.

Dubbed the Spicy Veggie One, this wrap contains just 364 calories per serving.

Joining the permanent McDonald’s menu, the wrap will sell for an RRP of £2.99.

Lynne Elliot, Chief Executive the Vegetarian Society said: “We’re really proud to have worked closely with McDonalds for over 10 years and it’s great to see their veggie menu developing, especially as McDonalds tell us a third of their customers think it’s important to eat more veggie meals.

“There’s a growing demand for veggie food everywhere and it’s fantastic to see McDonalds meeting the needs of their customers.

“With the new Spicy Veggie One carrying our trademark, diners can trust their meal is one hundred per cent vegetarian.”

It came hours after fellow high street food outlet Greggs announced it was launching a vegan sausage roll.

Just in time for Veganuary, the option went on sale in 950 Greggs stores across the UK today.

With 96 layers of light and crisp puff pastry and a bespoke Quorn filling, the Greggs vegan sausage roll offers an alternative for vegans and vegetarians alike.
