Jamie Oliver, 43, is one of the nation’s best-loved chefs, better known nowadays for his quick and healthy recipes as well as his indulgent treats. The TV chef is a front-runner in campaigning for healthy eating, after making changes to his own diet drastically improved his own lifestyle. In fact, in recent years the dad of four has dropped two stone and continues to stay in shape with a healthy eating plan. But what changes did Jamie make to his diet to achieve such a significant weight loss?
One of the biggest changes Jamie made was becoming stricter on his alcohol consumption, significantly cutting down on how much he drank.
Jamie previously told Radio Times: “Your average Brit drinks booze. I’m not telling you what to do, but my rhythm now is only to drink at the weekend.
“It’s about a consciousness and knowing you’re doing something and being more mindful.”
In 2015, Jamie told This Morning hosts Holly Willoughby and Phillip Schofield he actually ate “more” than he was originally eating.
He said: “I lost 12 kilos quite quickly and I didn’t do it through not eating. I ate a lot, more than I was used to.”
But instead of hefty portions of meat-based or carb-heavy meals, Jamie made sure to eat a lot more vegetables.
Jamie also increased the amount of exercise he was doing and made sure to get more sleep.
He added: “I pushed meat down, pushed veggie up, got more sleep and more movement.”
The star also discovered how beneficial nuts were to his weight loss, adding to Radio Times: “A handful of nuts a day will qualify you for three extra years on the planet!
“And they make you half as likely to have a heart attack. Feed them to your kids as well.”
Jamie also made some healthier swaps to his diet, cutting down his meat intake to replace it with eggs and switching ordinary potatoes for sweet potatoes.
“If you swap potatoes for sweet potatoes once a week, bingo bango bongo! Sweet potato is one of the most nutritious foods on the planet and it’s a veg, not a starch,” he advised.
“Eggs are great and you can have them every day. Just don’t go bonkers. Swap them for meat in a meal,” Jamie added.
And it wasn’t just his diet Jamie made changes to.
On Loose Women he spoke about how having such a lack of sleep affected his health.
He explained: “I met a sleep scientist who said that sleep has the most powerful affect on all of your body – how you metabolise food, your skin, your energy ad the rhythms of those. No less than six and no more than nine.”
The celebrity chef insisted that eating well “doesn’t have to be complicated”, with the easiest weight-loss method being eating filling foods that are high in nutrients.
On the Healthy Living section of his website, Jamie advises people always cook from scratch, as this allows you to have complete control over what goes into your food.
