Liverpool transfer news: Jurgen Klopp responds to question he needs to buy new centre-back

The Reds are facing an injury crisis ahead of their Premier League showdown against Brighton this weekend.

Dejan Lovren was forced off in Liverpool’s 2-1 defeat in the FA Cup at Wolves on Monday night.

Lovren joins Joe Gomez and Joel Matip on Liverpool’s injury list, meaning Virgil van Dijk is their only fit centre-back.

However, despite his side’s injury worries, Klopp insists he does not need a new centre-back this month.

“The only country that asks a question like this is England. Everything is sorted with buying players,” Klopp told talkSPORT when asked about the possibility of landing a new defender.

“We have four centre-halves.

“Three, maybe, two-and-a-half are injured so we’ll have to try and come through in the moment.

“We need them back but you cannot buy a fifth centre-half and say ‘so you play two weeks and after that the others come in’”.

Liverpool lost 2-1 at Molineux on Monday night as the Reds crashed out of the FA Cup.

Raul Jimenez and Ruben Neves netted to send Wolves into the fourth round.

Klopp made a staggering nine changes to his Liverpool starting XI following their narrow defeat against Manchester City last week.

However, despite making numerous changes to his side, Klopp insists the windy weather played a part in their FA Cup exit.

Klopp said: “We had a few players who were ill after the Manchester City game.

“The wind didn’t help, players struggled to control the ball.”

Liverpool are back in action Saturday afternoon against Brighton in the Premier League (3pm kick off).

The Reds are hoping to extend their four-point lead ahead of City at the top of the table.
