Golden Globes: Brits SWEEP awards as Richard Madden, Olivia Colman and Ben Whishaw win

Richard Madden, 32, took home the Golden Globe for best actor in a TV series, drama, for the smash hit thriller series Bodyguard. The former Game of Thrones star thanked his parents, who flew to Los Angeles from Scotland for the ceremony, in his acceptance speech, saying: “I wouldn’t be here without you.” Multi-BAFTA Award winner Olivia Colman, 44, scooped the gong for best actress in a musical/comedy for her role in The Favourite, entertaining the audience as she expressed her gratitude for the sandwiches at the bash. After receiving her award, she insisted: “I’m not going to cry because my entire table will point and laugh at me as I’ve been crying all evening.” She went on to thank her co-stars Emma Stone and Rachel Weisz, affectionately calling the pair “ma b*****s”(sic), adding: “Every second of working with you was such a joy and I was so sad that it finished.”

The British actress said she had a “f***ing blast” filming The Favourite, gushing: “I would like to tell you how much this film meant to me but I can’t think of it because I’m too excited.”

Addressing her husband, Ed Sinclair, she concluded: “Ed and the kids, look! Yay!”

Meanwhile, 38-year-old Ben Whishaw won for his portrayal of Norman Scott in A Very English Scandal.

Ben dedicated his win to Norman, whose affair with British politician Jeremy Thorpe (played by Hugh Grant in the series) was the centre of a huge political scandal in the 1970s.

“[He] took on the establishment with courage and a defiance that I find completely inspiring,” Ben said.

“He’s a true queer hero and icon. And Norman, this is for you.”

The biggest shock of the Golden Globes 2019 was hot favourite A Star Is Born missing out on several of the big awards, with lead stars Lady Gaga, 32, and Bradley Cooper, 44, losing out on both the best actor and actress gongs.

The movie was also snubbed for best director, which went to Alfonso Cuaron for Roma.

In the end, A Star Is Born scooped just one award for best original song for Shallow.
