Conor McGregor vs Khabib 2 EXCLUSIVE: UFC insider reveals rematch plans

Buffer is steeped in UFC history and has been involved in the sport for well over two decades.

He was the man who announced McGregor and Khabib’s thrilling showdown in October last year and he thinks he will be called upon to voice round two in the near future.

Khabib beat McGregor by submission at UFC 229 before ugly scenes marred the aftermath, which has resulted in both fighters being fined and suspended.

There were doubts over where the pair would be allowed to face each other again, such as the intensity of their hatred.

But Buffer fully believes plans will be drawn up to schedule a bout in 2019.

The long-term announcer sat down with Express Sport in the Bahamas at the Atlantis Resort & Casino as part of the PokerStars Players No Limit Hold’em Championship (PSPC) to provide an inside look into this year’s UFC plans.

“I think you are going to find McGregor and Khabib will go at it before the end of the year,” Buffer exclusively told Express Sport.

“There is too much money involved, more so than last time.

“Last time was the biggest pay-per-view ever and this next one could possibly break the pay-per view record.

“There are so many eyeballs watching it and they want to see it.”

With his longevity in UFC, you could be forgiven for thinking Buffer would have a heads up about behind-the-scenes talks.

But if he does, he kept his cards very close to his chest.

“That is just a general consensus,” he added.

“I don’t have inside information. I am not the powers that be.

“I am the mercenary that the owners of the UFC point and I shoot.”

Buffer, as a keen poker player, also participated in the PSPC where he took a $60,000 buy-in up to $100,000 after round one.

The 61-year-old aims to take on the professionals at the final table and he is not short of any confidence.

“I had $100,000 but you have got to play, you cannot sit back so I ended the day on $71,000,” he said.

“That is plenty of chips to start day two.

“I always sit back for the first hour. Watch every player and see how they play and then I’ll make my decision.

“I’ll just play basic poker and get a feel for everybody at the table.

“I always believe I will make the final table. I don’t get into these things unless I think I can get to the final table.”
