Chelsea transfer news: Blues warned of ‘demoralising’ January window deal

That is the view of Arsenal legend Martin Keown.

Hudson-Odoi starred for Chelsea on Saturday in their 2-0 win over Nottingham Forest with two assists for Alvaro Morata.

His impressive display came amid increasing speculation over his future.

The 18-year-old has 18 months left on his contract at Stamford Bridge but wants assurances about his playing time.

Those doubts have led to interest from Bayern Munich, who are prepared to offer as much as £30million for him.

And Bayern boss Niko Kovac revealed the club are actively keeping tabs on Hudson-Odoi.

“We always need young players,” Kovac told reporters.

“It is my job and the job of [Bayern sporting director] Hasan Salihamidzic to change the team as the team does not get any younger.

“[Hudson-Odoi] is from the same year as [Jadon] Sancho, which was very successful.

“It is completely normal that we are aware of and are following the player.

“For if and when something will happen you will have to ask Brazzo (Bayern’s sporting director Salihamidzic).”

Chelsea have won six out of the past seven FA Youth Cup finals but their young players have been unable to establish themselves in the first-team.

And Keown feels letting Hudson-Odoi leave would be another huge blow to the backroom staff at Chelsea.

Keown wrote in the Daily Mail: “If Bayern Munich are prepared to pay £30million for one of your players, surely that is a sign you should keep them.

“It is to Callum Hudson-Odoi’s great credit that one of the biggest clubs in world football see that he has a future at the highest level. Chelsea should view him as a part of their future for the next decade, not an asset to be sold.

“Every time a homegrown player makes it into the first team at a club, it gives the whole academy a huge lift.

“Whenever a player with Hudson-Odoi’s ability is allowed to leave, it must be demoralising for all the coaches who have worked so hard to develop them.

“Chelsea continue to attract some of the best young players, but for how long will that continue if even a player as good as Hudson-Odoi cannot get a first-team place?”
