ISIS attack: Two British special forces soldiers ‘seriously injured’

The soldiers were attacked in Deir al-Zour, the BBC reports, while other media said the incident took place in Al-Shafah, a town near Syria’s border with Iraq. The two soldiers have been airlifted to hospital by a US helicopter. It is believed the attack, which also injured several coalition fighters, took place this morning.

Rudaw news, a Kurdish outlet, reports that the British soldiers were injured in attack on a Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) base in the town of Deir al-Zour.

It was also reported that a Kurdish fighter was killed.

An SDF official told Rudaw: “Due to a smart missile attack by ISIS, a fighter of the YPG was killed and another wounded, in addition to two British soldiers.”

The incident was first revealed by members of the Kurdish-led People’s Protection Units (YPG) on social media.

They said the soldiers were injured by an anti-tank missile being fired at Syrian Democratic Forces.

They rejected claims made on Syrian TV earlier in the day that two British soldiers had died.

A Ministry of Defence spokesman told Press Association: “We do not comment on special forces.”
