Poland fire: Five teenage girls DEAD as blaze rips through escape room adventure game

A man was seriously injured by the fire but survived. The inferno broke out at 5pm local time (4pm GMT) on Friday at a party attraction known as an escape room. In escape rooms, users are locked in a room and must answer puzzles and complete tasks to get out.

Five teenagers were locked in the room and were killed by the fire.

Firefighters were called to a building in Koszalin, a city in northwest Poland.

The horrific incident happened in a residential building with an escape room inside.

Monika Kosiec, a police spokesperson in the city of Koszalin, said the girls’ bodies were found after firefighters put out a blaze in the room.

A 25-year-old man was taken to hospital with burns but could not be immediately questioned by police.

Poland’s Interior Minister Joachim Brudziński said on Twitter: “A devastating tragedy in Koszalin.

“Five joyful girls who were just beginning their lives have been torn from life.

“May God take care of their parents and loved ones.”

Mr Brudziński insisted fire safety controls would be enforced in all escape room across the Eastern European nation.

Escape rooms have recently surged in popularity in Poland and across Europe and the world. 

In the UK alone, the number of escape rooms has soared from just seven in 2013 to more than 1,000 as of last year.

The cause of the fire is known yet known.

A day of mourning has been announced to take place in the town of Koszalin.

A government official confirmed the five girls who died were all 15 years of age. 

One of the girls had gone to the escape room to celebrate her birthday, the official said. 

Polish President Andrzej Duda said the fire was an “appalling tragedy”.
