The couple had both been planning to make a 16 day visit to the resort. However Melania left for Mar-a-Lago without her husband on December 21. She returned to Washington D.C. for Christmas day.

According to Politico during a Cabinet meeting on Wednesday Trump complained: “I was in the White House all by myself for six or seven days.

“It was very lonely. My family was down in Florida.

“I said stay there ad enjoy yourself. I felt I should be here in case people wanted to come and negotiate the border security.”

The US government partially shutdown at midnight on December 22, after Congressional Democrats rejected the President’s demand to provide $5billion to fund a wall along the Mexican border.

Around 800,000 federal employees have been affected, with many being sent home without pay.

On Christmas Eve Trump took to Twitter to complain about being left alone.

He commented: “I am all alone (poor me) in the White House waiting for the Democrats to come back and make a deal on desperately needed Border Security.”

During the Cabinet meeting Trump reportedly also stated that armed secret service guards wouldn’t wave back at him.

He said: “I was here on Christmas evening. I was all by myself in the White House except for the guys on the lawn with machine guns.
