The point counting system ranked number one among commercial diets. The thing about this diet that our experts like no food is actually off-limits and you can shape your diet however you like so long as you’re meeting a certain points target every day. That makes a diet a whole lot easier to follow. Reporter: If fast weight loss is what you’re looking for, what about the keto diet? It was one of the most buzzed about diets last year but experts warn — The keto diet is extremely popular and our experts say it is an extremely bad idea. Yet it did jump this year to snag that number two spot on the best fast weight loss diets’ list and that is because it probably will help you take pounds off for the short term but that does not mean that you’ll keep them off for the long haul. So what’s the best overall diet to follow? According to experts the mediterranean diet which is at the top of the list for the second year in a row. It’s also the easiest diet to follow and the best plant-based diet and the best diet for diabetes and heart disease, so this is a really solid plan. It’s gotten top marks every year. So a lot to choose from but the good news is that hopefully means you find a diet that incorporates some things you like to eat so it’s easier to stick with your resolution. Robin, is that wine you have over there. Uh-huh. White wine. This is what you are spotting. You’re telling on yourself. Not me. Thank you, janai. Dr. Jen Ashton is here. Happy new year. Thank you. You too. First of all, okay, we hit the reset button. Many make resolutions that we’re going to be healthier and dealing with our diet. This is coming off the holidays where we tended to overindulge. A smidge and you know what — We were guilty here. I did some investigation around all the ABC studios, the cafeteria. This is ABC radio. Look what I found. All those guilty faces and everyone, all of a sudden. Was busy at work and on their computers. Here’s Tony Morrison. This was his very unhealthy breakfast but the point is our work environment, you know, just like many environments can sabotage us so we are guilty just like everyone else. Yes, we are. Yes, we are. Okay, mediterranean. So this is the academy awards of diets. Mediterranean pretty much wins or ties as number one best diet overall every year. This year no different. It’s also the easiest to follow. It is heart healthy. We’ve heard about that a lot. There’s data to support it and stresses fruits, vegetables, whole grains, lean proteins like salmon and wine in moderation, alcohol, wine in moderation and can have a little bit of bread in whole grain form. Weight watchers really making a resurgence with millennials. I think a lot has to do with the incredible community they have but basically the key to weight watchers portion control, nothing is off-limits and, robin, they have this app that makes it super easy to follow. You download the app on your phone. You scan a bar code and it immediately tells you, this is 12 points, if you want to add that to your day, you factor in your points and it’s really, really easy. Were there any surprises in the report? I was surprised by this one, robin. Something called the flexovegetarian diet. Maybe dabble in being a vegetarian so it’s kind of semi and made the list for one of the best diets overall and one of the best weight loss diets. You kind of — you taper off red meat and have protein in the form of fish or chicken but a lot of fruits, veggies, whole grains so our friend Dan Harris likes to say veggie till Friday, you know, vtf so for people who want to dabble, this is a good way to try it. Meatless Monday. Little things. Okay, we all have such great intentions. How do you stick to it. You have to evaluate your whole environment and I made this kind of bull’s-eye and start with your home environment. Then you work out to work then you work out to your social life and travel. Travel. It doesn’t work in all of these different arenas it will not be sustainable long term so plan for all these “Then” hit the bull’s-eye. Thank you, Jen.
