Newcastle 0-0 Man Utd LIVE: Premier League score, goals and latest updates, Paul Pogba

Newcastle vs Manchester United: Premier League latest score, goals and updates

NEWCASTLE 0-1 MANCHESTER UNITED | LUKAKU (63)

Newcastle XI: Dubravka, Yedlin, Schar, Lascelles, Dummett, Ritchie, Perez, Hayden, Diame, Atsu, Rondon.

Manchester United XI: De Gea, Valencia, Jones, Lindelof, Shaw, Herrera, Matic, Mata, Pogba, Martial, Rashford.

  • Ole Gunnar Solskjaer makes three changes. Valencia, Jones and Mata start
  • Romelu Lukaku scores after Dubravka spills Rashford free-kick

NEWCASTLE 0-1 MANCHESTER UNITED

73: Paul Pogba is upset with Jonjo Shelvey and rightly so! The substitute recklessly flies in with his studs up on the Frenchman and collects a booking. Could easily have been red.

The pair push and shove for a few moments before they are pulled apart.

70: Romelu Lukaku’s goal for Manchester United came just 38 seconds after coming on as a substitute against Newcastle.

69: And that’s exactly what happened as Kenedy, who scored against Manchester United at Old Trafford, replaces Ayoze Perez.

67: Rafa Benitez and his staff are chatting on the sidelines. I suspect they are thinking of throwing Kenedy or perhaps Muto into the mix and switching to a back four.

NEWCASTLE 0-1 MANCHESTER UNITED | LUKAKU

64: What an impact! Less than 60 seconds after entering the action – Romelu Lukaku has opened the scoring here at St James’ Park!

Newcastle goalkeeper Martin Dubravka spills Marcus Rashford’s dipping 25-yard free-kick and Lukaku reacts quickest to prod home.

It looks like Ole Gunnar Solskjaer could enter the history books tonight!

63: Manchester United make a double change with Juan Mata and Anthony Martial replaced by Romelu Lukaku and Alexis Sanchez.

62: Close again from Newcastle. Shelvey plays a beautifully weighted pass through to Atsu but De Gea is quickly off his line to collect. Manchester United just looking to weather this storm at the moment.

61: Big chance for the hosts! A wonderful pass from Jonjo Shelvey frees Ayoze Perez, whose shot is blocked. Shelvey then tries his luck, but his low drive is held by de Gea.

60: Atsu with another cross/shot from the edge of the penalty area. He’s finding so much space with no Manchester United player quite sure if they should be picking him up.

I should also mention that Chelsea are still being held to a 0-0 against Southampton at Stamford Bridge. 15 minutes left to play there.

58: I hear fans calling for Alexis Sanchez to be introduced – not too many calls for Romelu Lukaku I notice… they are currently both warming up on the sidelines.

55: Jonjo Shelvey comes on for the injured Mo Diame. Interesting to see how the midfielder deals with Paul Pogba for the remainder of the game – he was being man-marked! Fabian Schar is also helped off the field with what appears to be an ankle injury – no substitutes on for him yet.

53: Marcus Rashford looks to slalom his way through a crowded defence but slices his effort miles wide of the target. Victor Lindelof looked miffed – he was unmarked in the middle.

51: I really wish I could tell you that this game has improved… It hasn’t. It’s all very congested in the middle of the park with United struggling to find width or space.

48: Newcastle fans will hope the kick-off isn’t a sign of things to come as Ayoze Perez inexplicably hoofs it straight out of play. Almost impressive his lack of effort there.

Booked! Victor Lindelof is shown a yellow card for handball. Bit harsh considering Salomon Rondon bashed him five-feet to his right.

NEWCASTLE 0-0 MANCHESTER UNITED

45: Ok we’re back underway here, folks. We’re in desperate need of a goal here – either way would spark some life into proceedings! No changes at the break.

NEWCASTLE 0-0 MANCHESTER UNITED

HT: A spate of injuries towards the end of the half completely killed any momentum of fluency at St James’ Park. Mo Diame went down clutching his groin before hobbling off the field. No change yet – but he’ll be assessed over the break. Pretty, pretty, pretty poor as Larry David would say.

44:  “This game – which was quite good for a bit – has petered out a little. Its best feature currently is that the Man Utd fans have been singing their Waterfall song for about 10 minutes (with Jose replaced by Ole). It’s very good,” says Rory Smith at St James’ Park. I’ll have a look around for a video of this song at HT. Sounds like a SMASH HIT!

43: It’s all gone completely insane at the Vitality Stadium, folks. There’s been four goals in six minutes with the score 3-3 and it’s not even half time!

40: Anthony Martial is down after a 50/50 with Ayoze Perez. Just seen the replay and it appears the Frenchman took one to the nose. Painful.

38: The latest scores around the Premier League are as follows; Bournemouth 1-2 Watford, Chelsea 0-0 Southampton, Huddersfield 1-1 Burnley, West Ham 0-0 Brighton, Wolves 0-0 Crystal Palace.

35: Anthony Martial and Marcus Rashford combine nicely down the left touchline before Schar comes flying in with a crucial intervention. The ball cannoned over to Juan Mata in the middle – but wouldn’t sit for the Spaniard.

33: Paul Pogba fancies adding to his recent tally with an awkward, dipping effort from just outside the penalty area. The ball flew wide on this occasion but Manchester United are applying the pressure.

30: Booked! Lascelles overruns the ball and flies through Herrera to win it back. Andre Marriner has no hesitation in reaching for his cards. It’s yellow.

27: Save! Two chances for Marcus Rashford in quick succession. Dubravka gets something on his shot after he latched onto a long ball before another effort clears the crossbar moments later.

24: Manchester United have a real battle on their hands here. Newcastle are up for this and have looked the more threatening side. The Antonio Valencia vs Christian Atsu battle has largely been to thank for that…

21: Atsu! The Newcastle winger has been involved in everything promising for Newcastle tonight – but his finishing leaves a lot to be desired. Atsu nutmegs Paul Pogba on the edge of the penalty area before unleashing a shot that troubles the corner flag on the either side of the pitch.

18: Recovery of the season! Phil Jones dithers and Perez steals it off his toes before laying it over to Rondon. The Manchester United centre-back recovers with a great sliding challenge.

15: Atsu doing his best to turn the tide here. That’s the second time in as many minutes that he’s nipped in down the left touchline and fired towards goal. No venom on the shot.

13: Well I suspect tonight will be a very long and frustrating evening for the Newcastle fans. They look happy to sit back and absorb the early pressure. There has been a bright moment with Atsu testing David de Gea – but nothing too troubling.

They were 2-0 up against United at Old Trafford by this stage earlier in the season…

10: Very lucky from Ritchie, whose attempted headed clearance falls kindly for Juan Mata inside the penalty area. Fortunately for him, the Spaniard lost his bearings and the Toon clear.

A spot of danger now for the hosts with Marcus Rashford standing over a free-kick… Dubravka spills it but Martial pokes the rebound behind.

8: Still no goals in any Premier League fixture tonight. I think the most noticeable incident was Burnley’s Ben Mee being booked…

Mo Diame controls Fabian Schar’s pass but doesn’t look where any of his colleagues are and thumps it straight out of play. Not his finest moment.

5: Couple of good moments from the visitors as Anthony Martial plays a neat one-two with Juan Mata before being tackled. Paul Pogba also tested Dubravka with an angled effort.

3: Rafa’s already got the pen and paper out on the sidelines. Not quite sure how much he’s learnt in the opening three minutes. Quite a slow tempo here in the early stages as both sides settle into their rhythm. Crowd cheering, jeering and signing for absolutely everything.

NEWCASTLE 0-0 MANCHESTER UNITED

1: We. Are. Underway. Not quite the acid test test for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s Manchester United – but I think we should get some indication of how far they’ve come since Jose Mourinho’s sacking. As for Newcastle, two points from a possible nine over Christmas was poor. Late festive cheer very much needed.

Nearly ready?

19:55: We’re almost underway here at St James’ Park, folks. It’s already insanely noisy inside the stadium and now the wonderful Local Hero plays loudly as the players emerge from the tunnel. Deafening…

Set-piece worry?

19:50: Ole Gunnar Solskjaer wants his Manchester United players to stop conceding goals from set pieces.

Caretaker manager Solskjaer has picked up three impressive wins since taking over from Jose Mourinho, but his side has yet to keep a clean sheet.

And the three goals United have conceded have all come from set pieces, which is something Solskjaer has worked on in training ahead of their trip to Newcastle.

“We need to keep clean sheets,” Solskjaer said after Nathan Ake headed past David De Gea from a Bournemouth corner.

“We have not done that so far so we know there are loads of things we need to work on. But this is the way we want to see ourselves attacking. We’ve conceded three goals from three set pieces.”

Underway…

19:45: Four other Premier League fixtures have just got underway folks. I’ll keep you informed with all the goals as they (hopefully) go in.

Twitter round-up

Lee: Why do Manchester United fans think they are an amazing team? Been complete toilet all season. Paul Pogba had two good games in two years and now apparently they are this super team?!

Tony: I am so excited! Loving starting line-up and can’t wait for Alexis Sanchez to come in off the bench and see him at his best again just like his Arsenal days.

Matt: Really struggled to break down defensive teams the last few years (even before Mourinho) There’s not many better at setting that up than Rafa, decent early test for Ole.

£32million bid

19:35: Manchester United have told Roma that they are interested in signing Kostas Manolas, according to reports in Italy.

Manchester United have been linked with a whole host of top level centre-backs, including Toby Alderweireld, Kalidou Koulibaly and Eder Militao.

However, it seems another ace is in the Red Devils’ sights with the January transfer window due to open in less than 24 hours.

According to Italian outlet Tutto Mercato Web, United have “already expressed a clear interest” in Manolas.

Not quite £58million on Christian Pulisic, granted – but I suspect United fans will be desperate for a new centre-back over most forwards!

Alexis to benefit

19:30: Ole Gunnar Solskjaer says Alexis Sanchez is “champing at the bit” to finally show Manchester United fans what he is all about.

“He’s had some great training sessions the last few days, he wanted to be here today, but we have to manage him,” Solskjaer said. “I think he’s a player that would benefit from the interchanging, the rotation, the movement.

“Of course, the more chances you create, the more times you get the ball into the final third, he’ll be an asset for us – on the floor, in between or in behind. I think he’s looking forward to it – it certainly looked like it (on Saturday) in the session because he scored quite a few nice goals so that was encouraging.”

Big test

19:25: Who better to preview Newcastle’s prospects than Mr Newcastle himself, Alan Shearer.

“It’s going to be a big test and a tough game for Newcastle tonight,” he told the BBC.

“You do get the feeling a lot of these fans turn up because they have to – it’s their life. They support this club though thick and thin. They are turning up and hoping more than anything and it’s been like that for a while.

“We knew before a ball was kicked it would be a long, hard season and I think they will have enough – just- if they keep hold of Rafa Benitez to the end of the season.”

Transfer window

19:20: So the first mega-money deal of the transfer window has been completed by… Chelsea!

The Borussia Dortmund midfielder has joined Chelsea but will be loaned back to the German club for the remainder of the season.

Chelsea will pay £58million for the United States international, who has scored three goals in all competitions so far this term.

He obviously joins the illustrious list of United States internationals ply their trade in England.

Brian McBride, Brad Friedel, John Harkes… who could forget these guys! Obviously Clint Dempsey is the most successful of the lot, right?

The Rafa curse…

19:15: Rafael Benitez has won each of his last four competitive home games in charge of English clubs against Manchester United; twice with Liverpool, once with Chelsea and also with Newcastle last season.

We are talking facts.

Twitter round-up

Even: Super worried about Salomon Rondon! I really think he will cause us so many problems. Just hope we can outscore them.

Ron: Nice to see Juan Mata starting! Marouane Fellaini not in the squad either. Let’s see how Antonio Valencia performs tonight…

Aldrin: Good to see Alexis Sanchez on the bench. Hopefully this kickstarts his Manchester United career properly. Antonio Valencia and Phil Jones not my favourite players, but in this system they might actually be good. Can’t wait!

Team news – Manchester United

19:10: It’s a hat-trick of changes for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer following Sunday’s win over Bournemouth.

The first was expected with Phil Jones replacing the absent Eric Bailly, who starts his three-match suspension for that ridiculous red card.

Elsewhere the lesser-spotted Antonio Valencia returns to the starting XI and takes the captaincy off Ashley Young, who drops to the bench.

Juan Mata starts ahead of Jesse Lingard in midfield.

Romelu Lukaku and Alexis Sanchez are among the substitutes and will want to stake a claim for a starting berth.

Team news – Newcastle

19:08: OK, that’s one confirmed change for Rafa Benitez.

It’s enforced with defender Federico Fernandez failing to recover from the hip injury which forced him off during the 1-1 draw with Watford. Fabian Schar replaces him.

Ole Gunnar win a forth?

19:05: Manchester United were lifeless in defeat to bitter rivals Liverpool on December 17 – a 3-1 loss that proved the final straw for the powers that be, with Jose Mourinho swiftly shown the exit door after two-and-a-half years.

Fan favourite Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has been parachuted into the hotseat and could scarcely have wished for a better start to life as caretaker manager, having joined Sir Matt Busby and Mourinho as the only managers in United’s history to have begun their reign with three straight league wins.

They have also entertained, netting 12 goals in the process, and head to St James’ Park looking to continue their 100 per cent record against a Newcastle side that have stuttered recently.

The starting XI…

19:00: And here come the line-ups. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer welcomes Alexis Sanchez back to the squad. The Chilean is on the bench alongside Romelu Lukaku.

Subs: Woodman, Lejeune, Manquillo, Shelvey, Kenedy, Muto, Joselu.

Manchester United XI: De Gea, Valencia, Jones, Lindelof, Shaw, Herrera, Matic, Mata, Pogba, Martial, Rashford.

Elsewhere

18:58: As I said, plenty of action going on elsewhere tonight.

The fixtures read; Bournemouth vs Watford, Chelsea vs Southampton, Huddersfield vs Burnley, West Ham vs Brighton, Wolves vs Crystal Palace.

They are all scheduled to start at 7:45pm EXCEPT the clash at the Vitality Stadium, which has been delayed 15 minutes because of a suspected fire… that proved NOT to be a fire.

Evening…

18:55: Aaaaaand back to reality.

I’m afraid the magic, festive Christmas period has finished and the brutal reality of normal life has kicked back in.

But… the Premier League will help soften the blow.

We’ve got six fixtures to look forward to this evening including Southampton’s trip to Chelsea and an important relegation six-pointer between Burnley and Huddersfield.

But we’ll be focusing on events at St James’ Park tonight as Ole Gunnar Solskjaer aims to become only the second manager in United’s history to win his first four league games in charge, emulating Matt Busby in 1946.

I’m happy to report that I wasn’t alive when that happened – but could we witness history here tonight?

Let’s get going. Team news and line-ups coming up shortly. Standby…
