The defending champions have endured a torrid December, tasting defeat against Crystal Palace and Leicester, and are a massive 11 points worse off than this stage in 2017/18.

Meanwhile, are also struggling despite a recent resurgence under interim manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer – but which teams have improved most compared to this stage last season?

Promoted teams

Wolves are the surprise package of the season and caused yet another upset when they came from behind to beat Tottenham at Wembley.

Nuno Espirito Santo’s side are now up to seventh while both Fulham and Cardiff also recorded wins this weekend.

The Bluebirds have goalkeeper Neil Etheridge to thank for their three points after his penalty save from James Maddison while Aleksandar Mitrovic spared Aboubakar Kamara’s blushes with a late goal at home to Huddersfield.

The Cottagers are currently 19th while Cardiff are three points clear of the relegation zone in 16th.

17. Burnley: -18pts (-11 places)

Victory over West Ham ended a torrid run for Sean Dyche’s men, although the Clarets are nowhere near the form displayed 12 months ago.

16. Huddersfield Town: -13pts (-9 places)

Defeat to Fulham was a huge blow to the Terrier’s survival hopes, with David Wagner’s men experiencing second-season syndrome.

15. Manchester City: -11pts (-1 place)

Second in the Premier League but 11 points behind their 2017/18 tally and playing catch up to Liverpool.

14. Manchester United: -8pts (-4 places)

The Red Devils endured their worst-ever start to a Premier League season before Jose Mourinho’s sacking, and the damage is only just starting to be repaired under Solskjaer.

13. Southampton: -4pts (-3 places)

Performances and results have picked up under Ralph Hasenhuttl but Saints still have work to do in order to secure survival.

12. Newcastle United: +/- (+/- 0 places)

Newcastle are without a win in three matches but are still matching their form from last season.

11. Everton: +/- (-1 place)

Like Newcastle, Everton have gone through a slump with one win in seven but their strong start still sees the Toffees level with their past performance.

10. Crystal Palace: +1pt (+2 places)

Victory over Man City has helped Palace improve on their 2017/18 tally.

9. Leicester City: +1pt (+/- 0 places)

An inconsistent run of results for the Foxes has prevented Claude Puel’s men from kicking on this year.

8. Arsenal: +1pt (+1 place)

New manager, (almost) same old Arsenal.

7. Chelsea: +1pt (-1 place)

The Blues enjoyed a brilliant start to the campaign but have tailed off in recent weeks.

6. Watford: +3pts (+1 place)

Brilliant one week, hopeless the next.

Javi Gracia’s side are certainly unpredictable, although they are currently bettering last year’s performance.

5. Brighton & Hove Albion: +4pts (-1 place)

Steady improvement on the south coast for Chris Hughton’s men, helped by Saturday’s win over Everton.

4. Tottenham Hotspur: +8pts (+2 places)

Defeat to Wolves has put a dampener on Spurs’ title charge, although they are still in closer contention than previous seasons.

3. Bournemouth: +9pts (+6 places)

The Cherries were a force to be reckoned with in the opening months of the campaign and are still one of the success stories of the season, despite hammerings from Liverpool, Tottenham and United.

2. West Ham United: +9pts (+6 places)

A shock losses to Watford and Burnley have halted the Hammers’ charge, but anything is better than their 2017/18 efforts.

1. Liverpool: +16pts (+3 places)

Yet to taste defeat in the league, but can the Reds keep up this level of performance until May?
