Liverpool legend Steven Gerrard should replace Jurgen Klopp for this reason – Redknapp

That’s the view of Gerrard’s former Liverpool team-mate and current pundit Jamie Redknapp.

Klopp does not look like leaving Liverpool anytime soon having led the Reds to the top of the Premier League.

He has impressed since becoming manager in October 2015, reaching two European finals though losing both.

Gerrard is in his first managerial role at Scottish Premiership side Rangers and guided the Ibrox outfit to their first Old Firm win over Celtic since 2012 at the weekend.

It comes after the former midfielder left his role in Liverpool’s academy to move north of the border.

And Redknapp believes that Gerrard’s impressive start to life as a boss shows he’s got what it takes to step into Klopp’s shoes when the German departs.

“When Jurgen Klopp decides to leave Liverpool in the distant future, it is looking more and more like Steven Gerrard will be the perfect person to take over,” Redknapp wrote for the Mail.

“If he continues to develop the way he has at Rangers, then he will be a ready-made replacement.

“Gerrard could have stayed at Liverpool’s academy to develop his coaching skills there but instead went to Rangers to test himself.

“Now look at him — fighting for the Scottish Premiership title and off the back of beating Celtic.”

Gerrard himself believes Liverpool’s focus should be on the German at the moment with his priority very much on Rangers.

“Liverpool have one of the best managers in the world and are flying high,” he said.

“Just because you have been a successful player does not mean you have the divine right to be next in the queue.

“Just because you are popular with the fans it does not make you the right man to replace Klopp, if and when he goes.

“It is very presumptuous. It is also disrespectful to Rangers given the size of this club and everything they have gone through to just assume I have come here to learn and use it as a stepping stone to Liverpool.

“I do not see it like that, although that talk is something I cannot control.

“I am desperate to be successful at Rangers. I understand the size of the club, and how much the fans want success. I am committed to it. I am giving everything I have got.”
