Rangers transfer news: ‘Key’ Alfredo Morelos admission made before Celtic derby showdown

That’s the admission of captain James Tavernier.

The Gers – who face rivals Celtic in the Old Firm derby at Ibrox today (12.30pm) – face a crucial winter window in which they will hope to add more depth up top.

And Morelos, the Scottish Premiership’s top goalscorer, is crucial with 20 goals in 33 games across all competitions this year.

Twelve of those have come in the league, added to seven assists, and though the Colombian international has also accrued three red cards this season and 11 yellows – he is crucial to Gerrard’s team.

The 22-year-old recently hinted that he expects to be subject of offers next month, insisting: “It’s very likely there are several teams looking at me and there are offers, but there is nothing concrete yet. I have to wait until the last game of the year is played and will try to end 2018 in a positive way.”

Gerrard even admitted that he expects bids and will field phone calls from interested clubs, but that Morelos is “going nowhere”.

And Tavernier has confessed how crucial keeping the star – who attracted bids from China last January and from Bordeaux in the summer – will be to the Light Blues’ Premiership title challenge.

Tavernier said: “If any player is on 20 goals they will attract attention. He’s been playing really well and if you will get interest from a lot of places.

“He’s a goal scorer and it’s key for us to keep hold of him and we’ll now need to see what happens.

“He’s improved since he came in. He’s improved massively. He’s a huge part of our game, holding the ball up, scoring goals and generally getting in and around their defence.

“He’s a talisman for us up front and it will be key to hang onto him.”

Rangers host Celtic with Morelos looking for his first ever Old Firm goal and Gerrard’s side seeking for their first league win over their Glasgow rivals since March 2012.

The two teams were separated by a single goal in their last meeting at Parkhead in October though the Hoops were far superior, but just three points separates them going into the final game before the winter break.

Outlining their game plan, Tavernier said: “The key is to come out the blocks and to show the opponents that you are up for a fight and that’s the main thing.

“Finishing chances too. We learned in Europe if we don’t take our chances against good opponents they will.

“We have to start fast and put the ball in the net and if we do that then we’ll be in a really good position.”
