Piers Morgan, 53, was left red-faced when he interviewed Love Island star Hayley Hughes on Good Morning Britain.

The broadcaster, who co-hosts the ITV programme with Susanna Reid, tested the reality star on her general knowledge, but was left blushing when he failed to answer his own question correctly.

Describing the hilarious blunder as a “humiliating cock-up”, the father-of-four joked about mugging himself off on national television.

Writing in his Mail On Sunday column, he penned: “When Love Island dimwit Hayley Hughes appeared on GMB, I decided to exposed her stupidity by asking her: ‘Do you know Pythagoras’ theorem to five decimal places?’

“When she said no, Susanna Reid asked me if I did. ‘Yes, it’s 3.147…’ I confidently began, before one of our camera crew shouted out: ‘That’s Pi, not Pythagoras!’”

He concluded: “I froze in horror. He was right, and I’d mugged myself right off.”

At the time, Susanna quipped: “You just showed yourself up Piers Morgan on national television.”

Admitting his fault, Piers replied: “I’ve just been mugged off, haven’t I?” before guest Charlie Frederik jested: “You’ve been pied”.

Piers, who also sits on the panel with Charlotte Hawkins, also recalled watching the journalist squirm as the autocue froze just moments before she was due to go on air.

Recounting the moment in his 2018 Morgan Awards, he wrote: “My demure GMB colleague Charlotte Hawkins rarely gets flustered when she reads the news, but lost her cool when the autocue froze seconds before we went to air.

“Her concern was exacerbated by the particularly sensitive nature of one of the main stories. ‘The script has gone down!’ she shouted, ‘and I really don’t want to go alfresco about a bionic penis!’”

Charlotte later told her 101,000 Instagram followers she had received the award for “most shocking exclamation”.

She tweeted: “Obviously delighted to win the Most Shocking Exclamation in @thepiersmorgan’s Morgan Awards in today’s @eventmagazine… #bionicpenis #wordsyouthoughtyoudneversay.”

The mother-of-one has been hosting Good Morning Britain as regular presenters Piers and Susanna are currently taking a short break from the show.

Charlotte, 43, was left in hysterics earlier this week after guest Entertainment editor Joe Swash made a huge mistake when reporting on Sandra Bullock.

When it came to Joe, 36, reporting on America actress Sandra Bullock’s new film on Netflix, the presenter slipped up on his words.

Beginning the report on Bird Box, Joe said: “Not so festive by the way. It’s a movie about the end of the world starring Sandra B****k.”

As the studio crew burst into a fit of laughter, Joe questioned what everyone was laughing at, to which Charlotte asked: “Is that Sandra Bullock?”

“Sandra Bullock,” Joe reiterated before adding: “Is that not what I said?”

“It didn’t quite sound like that,” Charlotte added as she and her co-host continued to make light of the matter.

Good Morning Britain airs weekdays at 6am on ITV.
