Man Utd news: Ole Gunner Solskjaer sent stark message over Jose Mourinho revival

That’s according to Craig Burley.

The Red Devils hammered Cardiff 5-1 before beating Huddersfield 3-1 at Old Trafford on Boxing Day for six points from six under the Norwegian coach.

That’s after Jose Mourinho was sacked last week with the United players consistently performing well below the level of their ability under the three-time Premier League champion in recent months.

But United have performed with more swagger and confidence in both matches under Solskjaer, with the much-maligned Paul Pogba scoring twice against the Terriers and earning the praise of his manager.

United are still eight points adrift of the Champions League spots but their improved performance levels under Solskjaer – who is in charge until the end of the season – have suggested a top-four finish is not completely out of the question.

Yet asked whether United now stand a chance against Paris Saint-Germain in the last 16 of the Champions League in February after their recent performances, Burley loudly laughed off the suggestion.

And he insisted United supporters must calm down due to the level of opposition they have faced during Solskjaer’s short tenure so far.

He said on ESPN FC Extra Time: “Hahaha, Cardiff and Huddersfield? Oh god!

“I’ve seen teams in lower leagues go to Premier League teams in cup competitions and win. Anything is possible.

“But because you’ve beat two of the worst teams in the Premier League, the roses are not all of a sudden sprouting out of the garden again.

“Do you know what I mean? People are off their rocker with things like this!”

Steve Nicol joked: “If Man United can persuade either Cardiff or Huddersfield to hijack the PSG bus on the way to Old Trafford and get changed into their gear and turn up and play for them, then yes they’ve got a chance.”

United legend Ryan Giggs, however, believes there is a real air of belief around the club since Solskjaer was brought in.

“It was Ole’s first home game, and the positivity that came from Cardiff game, the performance and result and I think everyone was looking forward to the game,” Giggs told MUTV.

“The big players are turning up, [Paul] Pogba with the goals, David [De Gea] with a great save and Marcus [Rashford] getting better and better each game.

“There’s a real positivity around the place and we need that to carry on now going into the Bournemouth game.”

United’s final clash of the calendar year sees them host Bournemouth on Sunday (4.30pm).
