Trump names acting defence secretary

Deputy Defence Secretary Patrick Shanahan has been appointed acting Pentagon chief, President Donald Trump has announced.

It follows the resignation of James Mattis, who hinted at policy differences with Mr Trump in his resignation letter.

Mr Shanahan will take over the role on 1 January.

“Patrick has a long list of accomplishments,” Mr Trump tweeted. “He will be great!”
