The protesters wore the same hi-vis jackets as campaigners have worn in France and chanted slogans such as “Banks got bailed out, we got sold out”. The protesters said they would march to Parliament every Saturday into the new year. They want to see a halt in housing evictions, the resignation of the Taoiseach Leo Varadkar and Health Minister Simon Harris, a cap on bedroom rent and legalisation of medicinal cannabis. The demonstrators, who blocked traffic in the centre of the city, said the protest is “recognition of the desire and right of all people to live, work and thrive in a safe modern and dignified manner”.
One protester, Sheila O’Byrne, said: “The illegal adoption and unmarked graves, an unmarked Irish Holocaust, I’m here fighting for truth and justice.
“For the weak and elderly and vulnerable where the Church and state profited on our labour.
“We want what we’re owed, the same as the industrial homes.
“The housing situation is a disgrace,” she added. “People are left out on our streets when we have buildings lying empty.
“I’ve asked the housing minister to assist the council workers. It’s not a question of money, it’s materials. We can make these empty homes liveable again.”
The yellow vest movement in France emerged in protest against fuel tax increases and a protest against Macron’s policies.
France has faced several weeks of serious civil unrest with riots in Paris and major cities leaving three dead and sparking 4,523 arrests.
Mr Macron was forced into a climbdown as he announced a £9billion concession package in an astonishing bid to buy off the protesters.
