Nearly ready…

17:28: OK, that’s enough of Neil Warnock’s mind games for one evening. He also added that Solskjaer SHOUDL win his opening four games. Players emerging from the tunnel to a boisterous Cardiff stadium. Standby for kick off…

‘Ole can’t believe his luck’

17:25: Cardiff manager Neil Warnock: “I bet Ole can’t believe his luck. I think it’s the best job Ole will have in his life, because he can’t lose really.

“He’ll hold the fort until the end of the season, he’s there for at least six months and if he does well he’ll get a couple of years. And if he doesn’t, he goes back to where he was enjoying it anyhow.”

Stagnant

17:24: Manchester United have lost their last three Premier League away games against promoted sides, as many as they had in their previous 36 such matches (W27 D6 L3).

‘Why not start him?!’

17:22: Ole Gunnar Solskjaer on Paul Pogba: “We all know what kind of player Paul is when he is in form. Why not (start him) as quick as possible, because he’ll make a difference for us.”

Twitter round-up

Tony: Guys, whatever the results after the game we should not, I repeat, we should not bash the team or the manager!!!! It’s time we all stay united by name and united by nature. Come on boys, let’s do this!

Fade: Haven’t been this excited to watch a Manchester United game in a long time. Kick-off can’t come soon enough. I hope we finally see the lads go out there, enjoy themselves, and play the football we’ve been longing to see.

Oggy: It’s obvious & justified that Solskjaer will take about one two games to analyse and settle as which combination will best fit, so nothing surprising about today’s starting line up, every brain having a bit of footballing knowledge would understand that.

Team news

17:20: OK, let’s have quick gander at what Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has done with the side.

Paul Pogba has been restored to the starting line-up as Ole Gunnar Solskjaer kicked off his caretaker reign at Manchester United against former club Cardiff.

The World Cup winner started his first Premier League game since December 1 and was among four changes to last weekend’s loss at leaders Liverpool.

Phil Jones, Luke Shaw and Anthony Martial came in against a Cardiff side showing one change, with Greg Cunningham replacing Joe Bennett.

Evening…

17:10: Hello everyone and welcome to our LIVE coverage of the Premier League.

I’d like to say that we’ve saved the best until last – but given some of the results we’ve seen today – I can’t in good conscious make that statement!

Chelsea have lost, Manchester City have lost and probably more staggering than that – Fulham have kept their first clean sheet of the season!

It all means that interim boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s first match has an even greater significance as Manchester United look to close the gap on their top-four rivals.

Shall we see his first starting XI?

CARDIFF vs MANCHESTER UNITED

Cardiff defender Joe Bennett is doubtful for the visit of Manchester United and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s first game in charge of the Red Devils.

Full-back Bennett was forced off in the second half of the 3-2 Premier League defeat at Watford last weekend and has not trained this week.

Lee Peltier and Greg Cunningham are on standby to deputise, while Jazz Richards will be checked after a recent hamstring problem.

Manchester United striker Romelu Lukaku looks set to miss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s first match.

The Belgium international has been given time off and has yet to return to the club, while Alexis Sanchez is also out for the trip to the Welsh capital.

Chris Smalling pulled up injured in the warm-up at Liverpool last weekend so is a doubt, while Luke Shaw will be hoping to return to the fold. Marcos Rojo missed the loss at Anfield, as did Matteo Darmian and Scott McTominay.

Manchester United provisional squad: De Gea, Romero, Grant, Young, Darmian, Valencia, Smalling, Shaw, Dalot, Bailly, Jones, Rojo, Fred, Matic, Pereira, Herrera, McTominay, Pogba, Lingard, Fellaini, Mata, Rashford, Martial.
