The 75-year-old actress appeared on the programme Happy Days and featured as a regular on the spin-off in the 1970s series Laverne & Shirley which ran for eight years.
TMZ have reported the actress’ death was due to complications from diabetes.
She directed Tom Hanks in Big back in 1998, making her the first woman in history to direct a film that grossed more than $100 million.
Marshall also directed A League of Their Own and Awakenings starring the late Robin Williams.
