Jose Mourinho: Ed Woodward makes Sir Alex Ferguson decision following Man Utd sacking

United released an official statement on Tuesday morning confirming Mourinho’s sacking.

The 65-word statement announced Mourinho’s departure with immediate effect.

United coach Michael Carrick will take over for just 48 hours, with the Red Devils then set to appoint an external caretaker manager after that period.

The Red Devils have confirmed the caretaker manager will take charge until the end of the season.

United could then move for the likes of Mauricio Pochettino or Zinedine Zidane next summer.

Former Red Devils star Laurent Blanc is currently the bookies’ favourite to be caretaker manger until the end of the season.

And according to the Metro, Woodward will consider consulting with Ferguson over the club’s next permanent boss.

Woodward will also ask the former United boss about what direction the club should go in.

Ferguson, who as in charge at Old Trafford for 26 years, is a big fan of Tottenham manager Pochettino – with the pair being pictured at lunch together last year.

The Red Devils had a poor start to the season under Mourinho.

United trail Premier League leaders Liverpool by 19 points following their 3-1 defeat at Anfield on Sunday.

The Red Devils were also handed a tough Champions League draw this week, with United facing PSG in the last 16.

A lot has been made of who should replace Mourinho at Old Trafford, with United hero Gary Neville urging his old club to land Pochettino.

He said: “I’ve been fortunate to spend time at Tottenham’s training ground, and for me he feels like the ideal candidate.

“Man United have tried managers who have won European cups, they’ve tried managers who have won multiple leagues.

“My view is they need someone who meets the three key principles of the football club, and that is promotion of youth, entertaining football, and to win football matches.”

United are back in action on Saturday evening against Cardiff in the Premier League.
