Games discussed this month include:

KEYFORGE: CALL OF THE ARCHONS
KeyForge is billed as the world’s first Unique Deck Game. Every single deck is one-of-a kind, with its own Archon and its own mixture of cards in the deck. In fact the Call of the Archons set alone has the potential to generate more than 104 quadrillion possible decks. That’s the equivalent of 14 million unique decks for every single person on the planet. That’s great in theory, but how many of these quadrillions of decks actually exists? Well, as of the time of this recording, the game has been available for about three weeks, and over 230,000 decks have been registered with the KeyForge app. The app can be used to record the decks you own, and, eventually, will also track each deck’s wins, losses, chains, and power. It’ll be interesting to see which decks start to rank in each of THOSE stats, as they’re unlocked and start to be used in the coming months.

GUGONG
During the Ming Dynasty, China was famous for its intricate bureaucracy, which often fell prey to corruption. Even though corruption came with stiff penalties, officials would get around it by being sure to return gifts that could cause a conflict of interest… after receiving a higher value gift from someone else. Gùgōng uses this questionable practice as its basis. Players take on the role of powerful Chinese families gaining influence and power by exchanging gifts with Officials. The gifts players offer must be of a higher value than those they receive, forcing them to make strategic choices regarding which actions they take each turn. Gùgōng is currently scheduled to arrive at retailers at the end of December.

TEOTIHUACAN: CITY OF GODS
In Teotihuacan: City of Gods, each player commands a force of worker dice, which grow in strength with every move. On your turn, you move a worker around a modular board, always choosing one of two areas of the location tile you land on: one offering you an action (and a worker upgrade), the other providing you with a powerful bonus (but without an upgrade). While managing their workforce and resources, players develop new technologies, climb the steps of the three great temples, build houses for the inhabitants of the city, and raise the legendary and breath-taking Pyramid of the Sun in the center of the city. Each game is played in three eras. As the dawn of the Aztecs comes closer, player efforts (and their ability to feed their workforce) are evaluated a total of three times. The player with the most fame is the winner.

ROOT
Root is a game of adventure and war in which 2 to 4 (1 to 6 with the ‘Riverfolk’ expansion) players battle for control of a vast wilderness. The nefarious Marquise de Cat has seized the great woodland, intent on harvesting its riches. Under her rule, the many creatures of the forest have banded together. This Alliance will seek to strengthen its resources and subvert the rule of Cats. In this effort, the Alliance may enlist the help of the wandering Vagabonds who are able to move through the more dangerous woodland paths. Though some may sympathize with the Alliance’s hopes and dreams, these wanderers are old enough to remember the great birds of prey who once controlled the woods. In Root, players drive the narrative, and the differences between each role create an unparalleled level of interaction and replayability. Leder Games invites you and your family to explore the fantastic world of Root!
