We’re still waiting breathlessly for Donald Trump’s proposed Space Force, an independent armed services branch, to come to fruition. However, America’s may not have to wait for congressional approval to make our dreams of intergalactic military dominance a reality. According to the Associated Press, Trump will sign an executive order by the end of the year creating the U.S. Space Command as a major military command. Hell yeah!!!
This is not, I repeat, this is not Space Force, although the AP notes it could help nudge along the process of creating Space Force.
Vice President Mike Pence is expected to announce the plan on Tuesday at the Kennedy Space Center, in Cape Canaveral, Florida, two U.S. officials told AP. Trump may sign the order the same day as the announcement.

According to U.S. officials, Pence will be at the Pentagon on Tuesday and will meet with the Joint Chiefs. Space Command is expected to be among the issues discussed. The officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they weren’t authorized to speak publicly.
Space Command isn’t actually a new idea—it existed between 1985 and 2002, before it was disbanded in the wake of 9/11, so that U.S. Northern Command could be created. The responsibilities of Space Command were taken up by U.S. Strategic Command and Armed Forces Space Command.
