Man Utd news: Why PSG Champions League tie is ‘worst draw’ for Jose Mourinho – Cascarino

That’s the view of Tony Cascarino, who believes Jose Mourinho’s side will struggle against the French champions.

United, who finished behind Juventus during the group stage, have struggled in all competitions this season.

They were beaten by Valencia and Juventus during the early stages of the Champions League and are sixth in the Premier League.

PSG topped a group featuring Liverpool and Napoli, beating the Reds on home soil despite being beaten by a stoppage-time goal at Anfield.

The Ligue 1 side have a frightening attack featuring the likes of Neymar, Edinson Cavani and Kylian Mbappe.

And Cascarino believes that threat will prove too much for Mourinho’s charges come the new year.

“This is the worst draw Manchester United could have got,” Cascarino wrote for the Times.

“The performance of PSG at Anfield when they lost 3-2 raised questions about whether attackers like Neymar do enough work defensively in big games but really Liverpool’s win owed as much to a side still adapting to new manager Thomas Tuchel.

“In Paris they beat Liverpool 2-1 and were excellent.

“They looked like much more of a cohesive unit and Neymar and Kylian Mbappe just keep getting better and better together.

“The hunger of the team, the way they pressed across the pitch, showed the manager is putting his stamp on this side.

“They have the quality of Marco Verratti in midfield and the vast experience of Thiago Silva and Gianluigi Buffon at the back.

“They have stumbled in the knockout stages before but I think they are one of the favourites this year.”

Former Bayern Munich star Lothar Matthaus agrees that PSG are favourites.

“The one German I am confident will have success is Thomas [Tuchel],” Matthaus wrote in his column for The Sun.

“Paris Saint-Germain are more focused and disciplined than in the past two or three years.

“That is down to boss Tuchel. He has altered the way PSG approach matches and prepared them for the Champions League.”
