Man Utd news: Jose Mourinho sack decision made by club just hours after Liverpool defeat

Manchester United manager Mourinho saw his side fall further adrift of the Premier League top four as Liverpool put them to the sword at Anfield.

The Red Devils went into the match as underdogs and, after naming a questionable starting line-up, were simply blown away by their fierce rivals.

Liverpool and Manchester United both traded blows early on through Sadio Mane and Jesse Lingard.

But Xherdan Shaqiri bagged a late brace to give Jurgen Klopp’s team all three points and propel them back to the Premier League summit in the process.

Many United fans are calling for Jose Mourinho to go.

But the Guardian have claimed United will not be parting ways with the 55-year-old just yet.

It is said that he will remain in place for the club’s clash with Cardiff next weekend.

Yet another defeat will no doubt see even more United fans turn on their manager.

United have a clear week to prepare for their Cardiff showdown.

While their rivals will be in Carabao Cup action, the Red Devils will not be following their elimination at the hands of Derby County back in September.

Meanwhile, Mourinho has been at odds with United midfielder Paul Pogba throughout this season.

But Match of the Day 2 pundit Alan Shearer thinks Pogba will outlast his manager at Old Trafford.

“We’re about to see who runs the football club,” he said.

“We’ll see in January if they give the manager any money to spend.

“My guess is, they didn’t give him what he wanted in the summer, why’s that going to change in January?

“So probably the player [wins]. There’s a lot of work to be doing to that team to get them anywhere near challenging again.

“If they didn’t back him in the summer, he wanted other players to come in, why would they back him in January?”
