Mark: Only Bernd Leno and Asmir Begovic (3) have made more errors leading to Premier League goals this season than Alisson. Letting it slip it out…

Mooney: If Jose Mourinho perseveres with this formation I reckon Romelu Lukaku could be turned in to a decent centre-back.

Jon: Nobody mentioned Keita’s studs on Lukaku when Lukaku got booked for a tough but fair challenge where he won the ball. Poor decision and Keita lucky not to get carded.

Edward: Lukaku needs to be far stronger. van Dijk is bullying him as if he was playing against a 5ft 9 inch striker. The ball is just coming straight back at United.

LIVERPOOL 1-1 MANCHESTER UNITED

HT: Sadio Mane is a fraction offside when going through one-on-one with David de Gea. The Spanish stopper nicked it off his toes in any case and there’s the half-time whistle.

Jose Mourinho will be absolutely delighted to see his side level after being dominated for the opening half-hour. Alisson gifts the visitors a crucial equaliser.

45: Wooosh! Fabinho takes an eternity to line up a long-range effort from 25-yards, but it barely travels 10 yards before being blocked. I suspect both sides will take the draw going into the dressing room at the break.

Two minutes added time.

43: Jose Mourinho is furious on the sidelines after Roberto Firmino deliberately clips Marcus Rashford’s heels to prevent him from breaking. You’d normally see an instant yellow for those – but It’s just a warning for the Brazilian.

41: The mood inside Anfield has changed totally after that awful error from Alisson. It’s the visiting fans who can be heard chanting now.

38: Credit to Jesse Lingard for following up on Romelu Lukaku’s cross/shot. The 26-year-old always seems to be there or there abouts when those opportunities present themselves.

Booked! Referee Martin Atkinson goes straight to his pocket when Lukaku goes through Keita in midfield. Replays show the Belgian touched the ball but laugh the man. Correctly booked.

35: Sadio Mane looks to hit back immediately with a speculative effort from distance – but David de Gea collects it with a minimum of fuss.

LIVERPOOL 1-1 MANCHESTER UNITED | LINGARD

33: Manchester United are back in it! And it comes from a very unlikely source – Liverpool goalkeeper Alisson!

The Brazilian stopper has been taking plaudits all week for his save against Napoli, but he’s just dropped an absolute clanger.

Romelu Lukaku fires across goal from the byline and Alisson spills it straight into the path of Jesse Lingard, who cleverly lifts it over the sprawling Alisson.

30: Sadio Mane has been directly involved in 12 goals in his last 16 Premier League appearances at Anfield (9 goals, 3 assists).

28: I don’t want to speak too soon because I could end up with egg on my face – but there’s the potential for an absolute hammering here if Manchester United can’t resolve their issues. They look completely devoid of a midfield, Romelu Lukaku is isolated and the defence are at sixes and sevens.

Basically, I’m not sure what Manchester United’s Plan A was but if their Plan B isn’t a hell of a lot better they’re on for a big defeat here.

26: Booked! Diogo Dalot collects the first booking of the afternoon for chopping down Sadio Mane on the left touchline.

The ball is delivered and NONE of Jose Mourinho’s side can clear it. It eventually drops for Dejan Lovren of all people, who swivels and skies it from five yards.

LIVERPOOL 1-0 MANCHESTER UNITED | MANE

24: Well you can’t say that it hasn’t been coming!

Liverpool have taken the lead courtesy of a clinical Sadio Mane finish. A chipped ball over the top from Fabinho finds Mane completely unmarked inside the six-yard box – and the winger brings it down on his chest before tucking it calmly past David de Gea.

Can’t remember many Manchester United teams allowing a midfielder that much space 30 yards out. Floodgates to open?

21: Mohamed Salah gives Eric Bailly the slip and chases a lofted pass from Fabinho. His cutback to Andrew Robertson yields a corner but Naby Keita is penalised for a trip.

18: I seem to remember that Romelu Lukaku was lambasted for having one touch in the opening 25 minutes in this fixture last season – I hope he’s prepared for the same treatment today! The Belgian simply hasn’t been involved with Liverpool dominating territory and possession.

15: Manchester United wasteful in possession, ragged at the back and being outmuscled. Not what Jose Mourinho will have wanted to see.

The Portuguese hasn’t left his technical area with his hands rooted inside his pockets. Barely an expression.

14: The more this frantic, breathless match continues – the more likely it seems that Liverpool will take the lead. Sadio Mane is allowed to drive forward 35-yards before someone closes him down and Fabinho eventually blasts high into the stands. One-way traffic at Anfield.

11: Seriously lads, d’ya want to catch a breather?!

Victor Lindelof sloppily gifts the ball to Mohamed Salah, who sets off towards goal. Everyone’s expecting him to fire but the Egyptian loses control of the ball and Lindelof clears. Jose Mourinho will not appreciate this 100mph start.

8: You can’t take your eyes off this one, It’s completely manic! Roberto Firmino wastes no time in getting forward and forces De Gea into a smart full-stretch save. Salah was looking to poke home the rebound – but there’s Lindelof to block.

5: GOALLLLLLFFSSSIDE! It didn’t take long before serious drama entered the frame!

United attempt a training-ground routine from a free-kick on the left touchline and Ashley Young scores directly from the set-piece.

Their celebrations are cut short when the linesman raised his flag because Romelu Lukaku was miles offside and interfered with play.

3: Hope a few people remember their ear plugs – It’s seriously loud inside Anfield today with the rendition of You’ll Never Walk Alone downing out Martin Tyler and the gang!

Liverpool have the first opening of the afternoon with Roberto Firmino seeing his angled effort blocked for a corner, which is promptly cleared.

LIVERPOOL 0-0 MANCHESTER UNITED

1: Y’all ready for this? The most hyped match in English football is now officially underway. The cynical part of me is predicting a goalless draw – but the hopeful part of me wants a seven-goal thriller. Let’s find out what it’s going to be!

‘Gain aggression’

15:57: “I have made many decisions to start with 11 players and leave other on the bench,” Mourinho explained when asked about Paul Pogba’s omission.

“I always try to achieve what’s best for the team. With Herrera, Matic and Lingard in midfield we lose some qualities but we gain aggression and simplicity – that’s what we need to play against a fast team like Liverpool.”

‘Proper fight’

15:55: No, Jurgen Klopp isn’t discussing what would happen if Roy Keane and Graeme Souness started a fight in the Sky Sports studio…

“We have to be creative, with them having five at the back we’ll just have to see how we go,” Klopp said. “We never know what formation they’re playing until we see them on the pitch and today we will have to do the same.

“We have to be creative but to defend as well. Rashford and Lukaku have a lot of pace and they will be a real threat, especially on the counter. We’ll see – it will be a proper fight.”

Late change!

15:53: There’s been a late, late change in Manchester United’s starting XI.

Presumably Chris Smalling has suffered an injury during the warm up and has been replaced by Eric Bailly. Phil Jones is now on the substitutes bench.

Trophies matter

15:50: You heard Jose and his not so subtle digs this week?

The Portuguese refuses to admit that this is the best Liverpool team he has faced and is loath to rank Jurgen Klopp’s team above Liverpool’s Champions League winners from 2005.

He told Sky Sports: “I played against a Liverpool that was European champion. I don’t know if it was better or not better; I know the other team was European champion and that this team won nothing. So I think I have to respect the ones that did it, and I have to respect the ambition of the ones that didn’t.

“In the end it is about respect, but I would expect maybe Rafa (Benitez), (Jamie) Carragher, Steven Gerrard would not be happy with me if I said this team is better than that team.”

Marcus Rashford to Liverpool?

15:45: Marcus Rashford claims it was always his dream to play for Manchester United and insist moving to Liverpool ‘was never an option’.

“I was playing for my old Sunday League team, Fletcher Moss, we won a tournament and there were loads of different scouts there,” he said. “For a lot of us, United was the one.”

On potentially moving to Liverpool as a youngster, he added: “No. Liverpool was never an option. Liverpool, Manchester City, Everton – there was no other club I really would have enjoyed going to other than United. It just felt natural thing to do.”

Ally: So Jose Mourinho chooses to leave Paul Pogba, Anthony Martial and Eric Bailly on the bench. Yet blames the board for not giving him transfer funds?!

Mahdi: Strong Liverpool line up, clear favourites but let’s see what happens. There’s no way Paul Pogba and Jose Mourinho can both be at Utd next season, not after being benched in yet another big game.

Reza: Happy with the team other than Henderson’s omission – he should be starting. I’ve said this before, but he keeps things ticking / composed in the middle of the park. He is also fully aware of the magnitude of this fixture. Over to the new signings to seize the moment.

Team news

15:35: Liverpool defender Nathaniel Clyne was handed his first Premier League start since May 6 for the visit of arch-rivals Manchester United.

Midfielder James Milner, who would have deputised for the injured Trent Alexander-Arnold, was ruled out with a muscle injury so Clyne, after just one 90-minute EFL Cup appearance this season, got his chance.

He was one of four changes with Dejan Lovren, Naby Keita and Fabinho also coming in for Alexander-Arnold, Joel Matip, Jordan Henderson and Milner.

Paul Pogba was dropped to the bench as Jose Mourinho made 10 alterations for Manchester United’s trip to Liverpool.

Romelu Lukaku was the only player to retain his place after Wednesday’s disappointing 2-1 defeat at Valencia in the Champions League.

Ashley Young was named captain as Victor Lindelof made a timely return from injury.

The ‘English Clasico’…

15:25: Manchester United may appear to be completely out of it themselves, but they can have another say in the title race when they head to Anfield in a match Sir Alex Ferguson dubbed the ‘English Clasico’.

Jurgen Klopp’s side are the last unbeaten team in the league this year and have been particularly impressive at home, but to extend their record they will have to overcome their own recent history against United.

They have beaten their old rivals only once in the last 10 meetings – a Europa League clash in 2016 – and have not tasted Premier League success against United since a 3-0 win at Old Trafford in March 2014.

Both teams have injury problems coming into the game, particularly in defence, which make this one harder to predict.

LIVERPOOL vs MANCHESTER UNITED

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has defensive issues ahead of the visit of Manchester United.

Right-back Trent Alexander-Arnold (foot) and Joel Matip (broken collarbone) this week joined Joe Gomez (fractured leg) on the injury list, leaving the Reds boss with just two fit centre-halves in Virgil van Dijk and Dejan Lovren.

Nathaniel Clyne has returned to fitness but midfielder James Milner is likely to start on the right side of defence.

Marcos Rojo joined the ranks of sidelined defenders during Wednesday’s loss to Valencia and looks certain to miss out along with Victor Lindelof and Alexis Sanchez while Chris Smalling, Diogo Dalot, Anthony Martial, Matteo Darmian, Luke Shaw and Scott McTominay are all doubts.

David De Gea and Nemanja Matic, who were rested for the trip to Spain, will return while Mourinho must decide whether again to leave out midfielder Paul Pogba, who failed to impress in Valencia.
