BBC Sports Personality of the Year voting figures AXED: How close was Lewis Hamilton?

Britain voted for Tour de France winner Geraint Thomas as their sportsperson of the year this evening.

He was placed ahead of Formula One champion Lewis Hamilton, who came second, and England striker Harry Kane, who finished third.

The BBC usually announce how many votes each sports star received after the show.

However, this year they have decided to hold back the information, meaning Hamilton will not know how close he was to winning his second SPOTY trophy.

The reason given was to bring the programme in line with other shows such as Strictly Come Dancing.

BBC sport journalist Francis Keogh tweeted: “I’m told there will be no voting numbers for Sports Personality as the BBC have brought it in line with other programmes like Strictly #SPOTY.”

Thomas scooped the prestigious award at the ceremony in Birmingham.

And he spoke of his surprise after a coming out on top in a stacked field.

“Wow. I really should have thought about what I was going to say,” Thomas said.

“Thanks to everyone that voted for a start.

“I just feel really lucky to have come into cycling at the time I did.

“There is a lot said about inspiration this evening and I was just going down the local leisure centre for a swim and ended up riding my bike.

“It’s just insane now I am stood here. I think I have got so many people to thank.

“I will obviously start with my wife. It is just as much for her as it is for me.

“She is always there and picks me up. I am really lucky to have her and my family.”
