Man Utd fans FUME as United make official Twitter announcement: ‘My son is crying now’

United announced on Saturday evening that Smalling, 29, has put pen to paper on a deal which will keep him at Old Trafford until 2022.

The England international could have been available on a free transfer at the end of the season, with Everton said to be eyeing him up

But United chiefs have moved to tie down the centre-back, who has formed a key part of Jose Mourinho’s defence this season.

United supporters, though, have voiced their fury on Twitter after the club announced Chris Smalling‘s contract extension.

“Thanks, son’s crying now,” wrote one Manchester United fan, turning to humour amid their anger.

“Lads it’s not April 1st,” added another, after reading the announcement.

A third disgruntled supporter said: “Omfg we’re such a banter club.”

“Wtf did I just see? this club is going nowhere with this kinda players trust me,” responded a fourth.

“Mediocrity FC,” quipped one fan, clearly unhappy about the deal.

There was a festive tone to one reply, saying: “Banter Claus has come early this year.”

“Brilliant, that’s mid table cemented for the next few seasons,” fumed another supporter.

United’s failure to hand error-prone Phil Jones a contract was questioned: “What about the other sidekick calamity Jones he’s got to be due one as well #really?”

Smalling’s contract comes as United struggle to convince David de Gea and Anthony Martial that their futures lie in Manchester.

Fans voiced their fury at the fact both players could be on their way within the 18 months.

“Tbh I want to see martial and de gea sign new deals,” wrote one supporter.

“Ok……buy where is martial de Gea [Ander] hererra and [Juan] mata contract????????” blasted another.

A fan said: “And next Announce [Ashley] Young and Jones and [Antonio] Valencia and no transfer funds in January for proper defenders there shouldn’t be a single player other than De Gea that should still be here from [Sir Alex Ferguson’s] time absolute p*** take.”

Smalling, oblivious to the fury United’s announcement had unleashed, opened up on what signing the new contract meant to him.

“I am delighted to continue my journey with @ManUtd,” Smalling wrote on Twitter.

“It’s an honour to play for this club & I wanted to take the [opportunity] to thank all staff associated with it over the last 9 seasons, my team mates past & present, & the fans who continue to show support for the squad game in game out.”

Smalling is in contention for United’s derby showdown with bitter north-west rivals Liverpool on Sunday.
