Who is Irish sports star accused of rape in Dublin? Why have they not been named?

What we know so far…

A woman, in her 20s, has accused an Irish sports star of raping her in a hotel room in Dublin. The Gardai – the Irish police – proceeded to launch an investigation.

It’s understood the woman was allegedly attacked in a hotel room after socialising with friends in south Dublin.

The alleged sexual assault is reported to have happened between 11:30pm on Sunday and 3:30am on Monday. She was taken to the Rotunda Hospital’s Sexual Assault Treatment Unit.

A source told the Irish Mirror: “The woman turned up at a south Dublin garda station and made a complaint of rape.

“Officers then took her to the SATU at the Rotunda Hospital for an examination.

“The case was then transferred to gardai at Pearse Street as the incident is alleged to have taken place at a hotel in the city centre.

“A team of officers under senior gardai are carrying out investigations.

“They’ll have to check for CCTV footage and the possible crime scene.

“It allegedly happened between 11:30pm and 3:30am after she went to a hotel room with the alleged attacker.”

Why has the Irish sports star not been named?

According to the Irish Mirror, the woman has identified her alleged attacker to gardai but the sports star has not been spoken to yet.

No arrests have been made.

At this stage, no Irish publication has chosen to name the star.

Where is the investigation at now?

Gardai have been gathering CCTV footage at the hotel with forensic experts and detectives visiting the property in South Co Dublin on Tuesday night to hunt for clues.

A source told the Irish Mirror: “Detectives and scenes of crime gardai arrived at the hotel on Tuesday evening.

“Their focus was to gather CCTV and examine any potential scene in a room to find traces that could identify the attacker through DNA.

“The complainant has not made a statement as yet. She is in a deeply distressed state and is struggling emotionally. No arrests have been made.”
