Turkey rail CRASH: Harrowing drone footage shows the aftermath of DEADLY collision – VIDEO

The video footage showed emergency workers on the scene working to rescue people form carriages trapped beneath the mangled metal wreckage of an overpass at the Marsandiz train station, to the west of Ankara. The accident occurred around 6:30 am (0330 GMT) as the train was travelling between Ankara and the central Turkish province of Konya. The Marsandiz station is around 8 km (5 miles) from the main Ankara train station.

Ankara Governor Vasip Sahin told reporters the crash was caused by the high-speed train hitting a locomotive which carries out track inspections.

An investigation into exactly what happened is still underway, however.

The drone footage shows the devastation of the crash as the remains of the carriages and the collapsed overpass can be seen from above.

Mr Sahin initially said four people were killed in the crash but his office later issued a statement saying seven people were killed in the crash, including the high-speed train’s engine driver.

Three of the injured passengers were in serious condition.

It was not clear at what speed the trains were travelling when the crash occurred, but it occurred at a station where the Ankara-Konya train does not stop.

An official from the Ankara governor’s office initially said the high-speed train had collided with a suburban train.

According to the state news agency Anadolu, 206 passengers were on the train at the time of the crash.

This is the second train crash in Turkey this year. In July, 24 people were killed after a train derailed en route to Istanbul.

The country’s deadlines rail disaster came in 2004 when 139 people were killed and dozens more injured after an express train travelling from Istanbul to the nation’s capital derailed.
