Man Utd news: Pundit reveals major Paul Pogba and Romelu Lukaku worry after Valencia loss

That’s the opinion of BT Sport pundit Jermaine Jenas.

Both of the pair struggled as United slipped to a 2-1 defeat in the Champions League at Valencia last night – albeit with progression to the last 16 already assured.

The Red Devils, however, missed out on the chance to top their group after Juventus lost at Young Boys in the other game.

United were well below par and could not have any complaints about their defeat in Spain, with Marcus Rashford only reducing the arrears in the final minutes with a well-taken header.

Among United’s most disappointing performers were Lukaku and Pogba.

The two are Jose Mourinho’s most expensive signings at £75million and £89m each but have endured underwhelming campaigns so far.

Pogba’s performance included a horrific miss from five yards out while United trailed 1-0 in the first half.

The Frenchman had been dropped to the substitutes’ bench for the club’s previous two matches but failed to make much of an impression in his efforts to force himself back into the starting eleven.

Analysing Pogba’s display, Jenas told BT’s Champions League highlights show: “Completely crazy miss from a player of his calibre.

“There are certain players in that Manchester United team that are just not in a good place.

“That [miss] just stinks of a lack of concentration, switching off at the wrong time. It’s not that he doesn’t care, he wants to score there clearly, he’s disappointed.

“But he’s, from a confidence perspective, not in a great place. Just like Lukaku as well.

“If anyone deserved a goal it’s been Rashford. While they’ve not been playing well, he’s been one that has kept going week after week.”

Manager Mourinho could not hide his frustrations with United’s performance.

“Nothing that happened surprised me at all,” he said of an error-strewn display which included a comical Phil Jones own goal.

“I expect more from my players, especially players that week in, week out, they ask why they don’t play, why they don’t start.

“It was a good match to play, without any kind of pressure, in a competition that everyone likes to play in.

“And in the end my team improved really when I made changes I didn’t want to make, which is frustrating because I didn’t want to play the three players that I played in the second half.”
