What Liverpool need to do to qualify for Champions League knockout stages explained

Liverpool have lost all three of their away matches in the Champions League this season.

But Jurgen Klopp’s men have been flawless at home with two wins.

And they will need another famous night at Anfield if they want to reach the last 16 of the competition.

In the corresponding fixture earlier in the season, Napoli scored a late goal through Lorenzo Insigne to win 1-0.

What Liverpool need to do

Put simply, Liverpool need to win to give themselves the best chance of qualifying.

If Paris Saint Germain beat Red Star Belgrade, a 1-0 win or victory by two goals or more will ensure qualification for Liverpool.

But any other scoreline would see Napoli sneak through.

Should Liverpool win and PSG fail to beat Red Star, the Reds will top the group.

If Liverpool lose and Red Star beat PSG, Klopp’s men would crash out of Europe altogether.

What does Jurgen Klopp think

Liverpool looked on course to take a point from their trip to Napoli and were caught out in the closing stages.

And Klopp wants his players to do “something special” this evening.

“We are in a good moment for weeks and months as a club and a team, we have to use it,” Klopp said. “One of the most difficult teams to play at this moment is Napoli.

“They were already really strong last year and have adapted really well to the little changes Carlo Ancelotti made. They are a really good side but we are as well.

“The competition is like this. You play the strongest teams and if you want to go through you have to win.

“We didn’t win often enough to be through already. That is our mistake and now we can put it right if we perform.

“We all know the results we need and it is quite difficult. Napoli are good in possession, counterattack as well, typical Italian team good at defending.

“It’s a big challenge but if something special is possible it is here and that is why we should try.”
