‘We’re under an evil spell’: Migrants contend with vitriol

Italy has been, for many, a gateway to a more promising future in Europe. But with interior minister Matteo Salvini’s anti-immigration rhetoric and a new, far-right government in power, Italy aims to reduce refugee arrivals and threatens to send back those who have already settled in the country. On its shores, the chaos and confusion resemble the scenes at the U.S.-Mexico border. And yet, beyond the perilous journey to Europe’s shores, the misinformation and false narratives that are spread about those who seek refuge are among the greatest hurdles they must overcome. In a world where many are—by necessity—increasingly on the move, what tools do we have to get closer to the truth?
