Transcript for What to know about the new strategy to prevent holiday overeating

To you to that new study about how to keep off holiday according to the CDC Americans gain an average of two pounds every year and a good portion comes during the holiday season, shocker. Nutritionist Maya feller is here with more. There is a new study out, correct. Yes. Talk to us about it. This study, well, first, let me say it’s amazing how many calories people can consume over the holidays. Researchers found people could eat as much as 6,000 calories in one sitting. What this study wanted to do was take a look at whether or not self-monitoring behavior would affect holiday weight gain. What they found is that people who were given pamphlets just like in that outlined how much physical activity was needed to burn off holiday meals in comparison to those who were given just basic nutrition information, these people gained less weight. Because it was right there for them. So that’s what we’re trying to do for you right now. In fact, a lot of people don’t realize how many calories they’re eating. We have Sam in our green room on the screen, she is running — she’s been running for 40 minutes. Did she run enough to burn off a holiday peel. Not at all. 40 minute. This holiday meal takes 45 minutes to burn off. What we see this Turkey takes 24 minutes. The potatoes take 14. Your gravy is 4 more mens and the Brussels sprouts are an additional three. This is not just about exercising, you know, as a compensation. Of course, we want to you exercise but this is about thinking mindfully and making intentional choices around your food. Not eating out of impulse and creating a holiday road map, right? Making sure that you have an idea about how you’re going to interact with food before you get into that situation. Great advice. Just something really good — let’s call it food for thought, shall we, for the holiday season. Maya, thank you. Check out the information on our website and check out Lukas
