Roger Federer returns to training and drops clue about clay return

Federer has skipped the clay season for the last three years but hinted at returning in 2019.

Fans are desperate to see their hero try and challenge Rafael Nadal on the red dirt for one final time before he retires.

Federer is currently in Dubai practicing ahead of his participation in the Hopman Cup, which commences on December 29.

And he revealed his team are still putting together their schedule for next year – but claims they are looking at how to fit in some clay events.

“I want to know it early, so that I can prepare myself in the best possible way,” Federer told SRF.

“I have an idea of what it might look like. But the planning is like a puzzle, so we have to discuss everything exactly.

“I had a great holiday to London and was able to train well. I’m still in love enough with the sport.

“As long as that is the case, things are going well.”

Federer, 37, is only expected to continue playing for another two years but he insists the stress of life on tour is not affecting his body to much.

“At this age you can not leave anything to chance,” he added.

“But I like doing that. Even traveling is not a problem.

“It’s different than it used to be. But the last few years have been similar.

“I feel physically and mentally the same.”

Federer’s next match will be for Switzerland against Great Britain in the Hopman Cup on Sunday, December 29 at 9.30am (GMT).

Cameron Norrie will be Federer’s first opponent, followed by a mixed doubles match.
